As we relished our meals, a wave of gratitude washed over me. Olivia's presence had added warmth and harmony to our lives, a delightful surprise during the unexpected.

Amid our casual banter, Michael, with childlike innocence, asked the question that had been floating in the air like a whispered secret.

"Dad, is it true? Are you and Olivia getting married?"

Olivia and I shared a surprised glance, appreciating Michael's perceptive nature. The unspoken dynamics were not lost on his keen observation.

A proud smile curled on my lips as I answered, "Yes, Michael. Olivia and I’ll most likely be getting married."

Michael's eyes lit up with excitement, his infectious enthusiasm filling the air. "That's awesome! I like Olivia. She's nice, and she makes the best cookies."

Olivia chuckled, her eyes filled with genuine affection for Michael.

"Thank you, Michael. I'm looking forward to being a part of your family."

The Burger Bar cradled us in its warm ambiance, creating a cocoon of shared joy and acceptance.

Gathering my nerve and not waiting a minute longer, I stood up and knelt on one knee, locking eyes with Olivia.

"Olivia..," I began, my voice steadier than I anticipated,

"I love you, Olivia," I continued, the restaurant's din fading into the background. "From the moment you walked into our lives, everything felt brighter. You brought joy, laughter, and an unexpected warmth that I didn't know was missing. I promise to cherish you, to stand by you, and to love you with everything I have. Will you make me the happiest man and say yes? Will you be my wife?”

The whispers from onlookers were drowned out by the pounding beats of my own heart. Olivia's eyes widened in surprise, and for a suspended moment, time seemed to hang in the balance.

The restaurant held its breath as Olivia, with tears glistening in her eyes, nodded, and whispered,

"Yes, Ben. I'll marry you."

Applause erupted from nearby tables, the spontaneous acknowledgment echoing through the restaurant. There was no ring, so I just stood up, pulling Olivia into a tender embrace. The unexpected proposal had transformed a routine dinner into a public declaration of love, and together, hand in hand we faced the curious gazes.

Now the town would have something else to talk about.

EPILOGUE

Olivia

The next days, weeks, and months of my life were the happiest I’d been in a long time. I couldn’t have asked for anything better. I had a perfect ring sitting lovely on my finger, a perfect man to walk down the aisle with, and a son to call mine. It hadn’t been very long yet, but Michael was already like a son to me.

The wedding date was set and all I could think of was walking down the aisle with Ben. My heart brimmed with an indescribable happiness. The anticipation of that momentous day fills my every thought, and I couldn’t help but smile at the mere thought of it.

Our journey together, filled with love, laughter, and shared dreams, had led us here and we’d soon have that beautiful moment where we'll exchange vows and declare our eternal commitment.

The thought of Ben waiting for me at the altar warms my soul. Every time I closed my eyes, I could picture us standing there, surrounded by our closest friends and family, sharing our love story with the world. I was sure my dad wasn’t going to be there.

The joy of knowing that I’d soon be his partner for life filled me with an overwhelming sense of contentment. Walking down the aisle with Ben is not just a moment in time; it's a symbol of our love, our future, and the happiness we’d create together.

I’d stare at him and smile anytime I got the chance to. He knew how happy I was, and he, too, was happy. The big day drew, and plans were getting in place.

Every passing day felt like two weeks and my patience grew thinner. If there was a way to bring the day closer, I would. But I’d have to wait.

Six days before the wedding, and my mom was at my front door. I was surprised to say the least.

“Mom!” I said out of shock. “What’re you doing here?” My eyes widened. “How’d you even know where I live?” I asked.

“Well, Nelly…” she started.

“…Yes, of course. Aunt Nelly told you. I should’ve guessed.” I rolled my eyes. “Come on in!” and I stood aside.
