I smiled. “Busy. I’m beat. Everybody wanted to see the hot chef.”

“You? :)”

I held back a giggle. “Ha. Yeah, right. It was actually because of your little apron show. It went viral.”

“I have no idea what you mean.”

“Maybe that’s for the best. So how was your day?”

“Still working. Lots of paperwork. Some new recruits.”

“Sounds thrilling.”

“I can assure you, it’s not.”

I decided to get to the point. “I think we should see each other again soon.”

I held my breath waiting for a response.

“Absolutely. Let me take you out for a proper dinner.”

I smiled at how gentlemanly Lucian was. “Sure.”

“I’ve got tomorrow night off. Shall I pick you up at 7pm?”

“That sounds great.”

“I’ll see you then. Goodnight. Rest easy.”

“You too.”

I smiled to myself and placed my phone on the nightstand, then closed my eyes and snuggled under the covers, imagining Lucian’s strong arms wrapped around me, his warm breath sending chills down my neck, his voice whispering sweet nothings into my ear.

I awoke to aloud ringing sound.

For a moment, I thought I’d slept through my alarm. But as I groggily rolled over and picked up my phone, I realized it was a much louder, all-encompassing wailing.

The fire alarm was going off.

I sat upright and blinked until my eyes focused, slowly taking in the scene around me. Thick smoke was making its way through my open bedroom door, with flickering flames in the hallway.

My heart pounded as I flung the bedsheet off me, trying to think fast.

The fire was creeping dangerously close to my door, licking at the drywall and wood paneling as it ate through everything in its path.

I stumbled out of bed and grabbed the nearest articles of clothing I could find, pulling on a t-shirt and shorts before making my way to the bedroom door.

I peeked outside the door, only to be met with a wall of smoke and flames. The entire hallway was ablaze, the heat intense, the acrid stench of burning plastic and chemicals making my eyes water.

“Shit!” I snapped, slamming the bedroom door shut.

How did such a massive fire start this quickly?

I turned around and headed toward the bedroom window for the ladder that led down to the street, but before I could reach it, a second fire materialized out of nowhere, blocking the way as I barely managed to leap back from the sudden heat.

I frantically looked around for another way out, but every exit was blocked. I was trapped.

I backed up against the wall, trying desperately to keep my breathing steady as my lungs filled with smoke and my eyes stung from the fumes.
