“Thought that was the last of me?” he asked, his voice low and menacing. With a laugh, he snapped his fingers and a ring of fire surrounded my food truck.

I glanced around, searching for an escape route, but there was none.

The imp could have killed me then and there, but he seemed to be enjoying himself, toying with me like a cat with a mouse.

“What do you want?” I demanded, doing my best to keep my voice steady.

He smirked, his eyes flashing with amusement. “What do I want? Revenge, of course. Lucian is a disgrace for demonkind, shacking up with a human. And now he’s marked you, like the pathetic dog he is. It’s disgusting, and I’m going to enjoy putting an end to his shameful behavior.”

I glared at him, my heart pounding in my chest. “You’re wrong about him.”

The imp laughed, shaking his head in disbelief. “Do you really think he loves you? Demons don’t love, human. We’re incapable of such a weak emotion. Now, it’s time for you to die, and for Lucian to suffer.”

He raised his hands, the flames dancing around his claws, until it grew into an inferno, heading straight my way.

I waited for the flames to engulf me, but instead, I heard a loud roar. I opened my eyes to see a massive black creature standing in front of me, dispersing the flames with his body.

“Lucian!” I cried.

He turned to me, his eyes blazing with fury, and I knew that he was ready to fight to the death to protect me.

The imp hissed in anger, his claws flashing with more fire. “Perfect. I’ll incinerate you both!”

Lucian growled, his voice low and menacing. “Leave her out of this, imp. This is between you and me.”

The imp smirked, his eyes glinting with malice. “You’re a fool, Lucian. You’ve always been a fool. But I suppose that’s what makes you so pathetic. You care about others too much, and it’ll be your downfall.” He sighed before concluding, “Very well, let’s end this.”

The imp raised his claws, the flames dancing around them. Lucian lunged at him, his claws slashing through the air. Thetwo creatures clashed in a fierce battle, their bodies locked in combat as flames rose around them.

The imp was cunning, his claws sending bursts of fire through the air with deadly precision, but Lucian was strong and determined, his body moving with deadly grace. Still, it was too close of a fight for me to just stand there and watch.

I hurried to my truck’s sink, blasting water into my giant pot. If the imp’s weapon of choice was fire, then I’d use water to slow him down.

With the pot filled with as much water as I could lift, I waited until I saw my chance. The imp had his back to me, and I rushed forward, hurling the pot of water at him.

The water splashed against him, dousing the flames that he had previously been wielding. He let out a hiss of anger, then turned to face me.

Lucian saw his chance, and he lunged forward, his jaws going for the throat. The imp was too slow to react, and Lucian’s teeth dug deep into the imp’s flesh before shaking him around like a rag doll and throwing him aside.

The imp let out a cry of pain, his body writhing in agony, though, somehow, he managed to shove himself back up.

That was when Lucian, with eyes burning hotter than I’ve ever seen before, roared out a final declaration. “I banish you,” hesaid, his mouth full of flames. “You’ll never step foot in the overworld again.”

“Impossible,” the imp gasped. “You don’t have the power.”

Lucian stepped forward, his eyes blazing with fury. “I didn’t, until you threatened my mate.”

With that, he roared until a portal sparked into existence around the imp, giving me a glimpse of a hellish realm of jagged cliffs and infernos. With a final roar, the portal closed, and the imp was gone.

Lucian turned to me and rushed over, asking, “Did he hurt you?”

I wrapped my arms around him and buried my face in his fur. “I’m okay,” I breathed, my heart still pounding. “Are you hurt?”

Lucian shook his head. “No. I’m fine. He never stood a chance against us.”

“H-how did you do that? With the portal?”

He seemed just as at a loss as I was. “I don’t know. It was like I tapped into something ancient. Like a power only my ancestors knew how to use.”
