It didn’t matter. I clung to him, my heart pounding in my chest. It was over. The imp was gone, and we were safe.

“Uh…”

We both jerked back, turning to see a delivery man holding a massive pizza. He glanced down at his phone, seeming convinced he had the wrong address. “Uh, so I got an extra large pizza for Lucian?”

Lucian’s ears perked up, his tail wagging behind him.

The delivery man took that as an affirmative. “Okay, I’ll just, uh… leave it right here.” He set the pizza on the ground and took off as fast as he could for his car.

I could hardly blame him. We must’ve looked like quite the pair.

Lucian shifted into his human form again, then picked up the pizza box. “Well, shall we?” he asked, grinning at me.

“Your clothes burned off again.”

He groaned, positioning the box to cover himself up. “I really should invest in some fireproof underwear.”

I laughed, shaking my head in disbelief. It was incredible how normal this all seemed now.

“Let’s go inside,” I said, smiling up at him. “I don’t know about you, but I’m starving.”

He nodded and gave me a relaxed smile, seeming like a weight had been lifted off him.

I guess we both managed to deal with our rivals today.

As we walked into the house, I couldn’t believe how much my life had changed in such a short time. I had gone from a lonely chef with a broken heart to a successful business owner with the love of my life by my side.

Grandma Violet knew what she was talking about, that old coot.

Chapter 20

Lucian

It took me amonth, but I finally got all my ducks in a row for the special night.

Zoe had no idea what I had in store for her, but she seemed to be able to tell that my nerves were high this evening.

Luckily for me, she had been distracted with all her new business developments. Other food truck companies wanted to become franchisees, and even one restaurant owner wanted to partnerwith Zoe to open up a place right near the water, where she could serve her signature Hell Pepper Gumbo.

Zoe managed to get a distribution agreement with my demon friend who sold her the first jar of peppers. It had been quite the undertaking, considering the logistics of underworld to overworld transportation.

It all seemed to be falling in place for her business.

But tonight was about us.

I had a special evening planned, and I knew that Zoe was going to love it. I’d been working hard to make sure everything was perfect, and I was finally ready to make my move.

Just before nightfall, I stepped into the office, where Zoe was finishing up some paperwork.

“Hey,” she said, looking up from her desk with a smile.

“I was thinking…” I started.

“Oh?”

“There’s this little bistro that opened up downtown. I noticed it on one of my calls. Want to give it a try?”

Zoe blew a lock of hair out of her face, clearly frazzled. “Ugh, but I’m a total mess.”
