“Everything has been about me, me, me these last few days, and I want to check in on you,” Hunter said, pressing his thumb along my chin while cupping my head softly. “I know the holidays haven’t been easy for you since your loss.”

I scooted closer and let out a sigh as I snuggled deeper into him. He dropped his arm around me, and I couldn’t imagine anywhere else I’d rather be.

“There’s something about this year that’s been different.” I smiled. “A good different. But what I’d give for one more moment with them.”

“I’m sorry, baby.”

“It’s really better this year, though. I just can’t put my finger on it.”

Hunter smiled, pulling me closer. “I wonder what that could be.”

“I have a hunch it’s you and the Knox family circus.” I sat up, looking into his eyes. “Thank you for reminding me to hope again.”

“I did that?” His eyes locked on mine as I nodded.

“You did. I used to think if I enjoyed any part of my life, I was somehow betraying the loss, and eventually, I let grief swallow me up around this time of the year.”

“You’ll never forget them, but you honor them every day by being you, Daisy. You are an incredible woman.”

“You’re an incredible man.”

He pulled me onto his lap. “I guess we’re just two incredible people. Should I go put on my Santa suit?”

I giggled. “Only if I can be your one and only ho-ho-ho.”

Hunter laughed, squeezing me tight. “Are you telling me my lines have worn off on you?”

“Did you like it? Was it a good one?” I laughed, resting my head on his chest.

Despite my best efforts, I could feel the sleepiness weigh on me with every passing second.

“You know, I was thinking…”

“Okay, lemme have it.”

“I think we need a puppy. I think I’d make a great dog mom. I’ll keep her at my house, of course, so we don’t irritate Purrlock Holmes.”

Hunter’s brows quirked. “You want to become a dog mom?”

I nodded. “I think it’s a good natural progression.”

“You don’t think jumping right to Tate already cleared the way for parenthood?”

I chuckled and shrugged. “I don’t know. Something just tells me my pup is out there waiting for me.”

“Whatever you want, baby.” He kissed me softly just as a little bit of fussing came over the monitor.

“Uh-oh.” I slid off Hunter’s lap as he yawned and stretched while making his way to Tate’s room.

I followed quickly behind to see Hunter checking his diaper. As if Hunter had been doing this since his birth, he did a quick swap and walked with Tate in his arms, humming softly as I wandered into Hunter’s bedroom.

I climbed into bed, determined to wait up for Hunter.

But then I happily drifted to sleep.
