“I can’t believe we’re doing this.” Hunter puffed air in the car and it billowed from his mouth. “Can’t we at least turn on some heat while we’re doing our stakeout?”

His hand reached for the controls, and I batted it away. “No, we can’t give ourselves away. Nate’s a police officer, for crying out loud. He knows to look for creepers like us.”

I chuckled. “Creepers?”

She shrugged. “I don’t know what else to call us.”

“How about spies? It sounds more distinguished.”

Daisy smiled and let out a happy sigh. “You mean like 007.”

“Aren’t I the next James Bond?”

She touched my cheek and a thrill ran through me. “Only if I’m your Bond girl.”

I blew warm air into my gloved hands and laughed. “Is there any doubt about that? I’m willing to freeze to death in order to help you with your homework assignment.”

Daisy rolled her eyes and giggled. “I’m not in school. It’s not homework. It’s a recon mission. This is whatwedo. And besides, it was your idea to put Amy and Nate together, so you’re practically to blame for coming up with this idea.”

I smiled as she put the binoculars back up to her eyes. Nate had wandered into the coffee shop, where Abby immediately informed of us his next whereabouts by text. So, here we were, sitting in the parking lot of the Buttercup Lake Recreational Center. We’d been out here for twenty minutes.

In bitter cold temperatures on New Year’s Eve.

“A-ha,” Daisy squealed. “There he is.”

“Yeah?”

“He’s got wet hair.”

“Okay. That makes sense.”

“He must have done some laps, so he likes water. Write that down.”

I scowled as she put her binoculars down.

“What am I supposed to write it on?”

“Your phone.” She put the binoculars back up and watched him get into his squad car. “We’ll definitely have to do a planned encounter that deals with water. Let’s just hope Amy knows how to swim.”

“Yeah, let’s hope, considering she watches my son.”

Nate pulled out of his stall and started toward the road.

She spun her fingers in the air as she put down her binoculars. “Okay. Let’s roll.”

I couldn’t help but laugh as Daisy watched the squad car slowly make its way down main street.

“I’m kind of worried about how much you enjoy this.” I pulled out of the parking lot and started back toward town.

“No, slow down. He’s coming to a stop sign. We can’t let him know we’re onto him.”

I chuckled. “Or he might be onto us.”

“Exactly.”

Nate slowly drove down main street and pulled up to a curb to park.

“Oh, no. Oh, no. Oh, no. There’s nowhere to go. He’s gonna see us drive by.”
