Daisy smiled as a snowflake landed on her nose. “It’s really coming down now.”

“It is.” I shoved my hands in my pockets. “Hey, did you need a ride home?”

Daisy shook her head. “Thanks for the offer, but Millie is coming to pick me up. She said she was finishing up some shopping at the antique store down the street.”

A diesel truck rumbled behind me, and I spun around to see Millie in the driver’s seat. She looked extremely surprised to see me.

“Ah, right on time,” I muttered.

Millie rolled down her window and smiled. “Hunter, what are you doing here?”

“Came for a burger, but I guess I’m out of luck.”

Daisy started toward the truck, and I followed close behind.

“Oh, Daisy.” Millie puckered her lips into a frown. “I bought a little more than I expected at the shop. You know, a little Christmas shopping for my Jackson. There’s really no place for you to sit comfortably.”

Daisy pulled her blanket tighter, and I glanced into the passenger seat, where a bag the size of a shoebox had been left.

That was it?

“Hunter, would you be a dear and drop Daisy off at her house? She’s just down the road from you.”

“Are—” I started to ask Millie the obvious, but she gave me the death stare before peeling out of the snowy parking lot.

Daisy turned and let out a sigh, shivering. “I’m starting to get the distinct feeling that Sunshine Breakfast Club is up to something.”

I pulled off my jacket and draped it over Daisy’s shoulders since the blanket wasn’t doing the trick.

I grinned. “What makes you think that?”

“Just a hunch.” Daisy shook her head and chuckled.

“Okay. So, let’s get you home before the blizzard hits.”

Daisy nodded and glanced at me. “You really don’t have to do this. I’m sure I can get my boss to take me home.”

“I am not disobeying Millie. Besides, I have to prove to you that I’m not a jerk.”

She laughed, following me to my SUV. “I don’t think you are, but I might take back my opinion on your heated seats in a few seconds. My boss said my coat was a total loss, and I’m freezing.” Daisy glanced at me. “And your car is already running. Maybe your girlfriend knew what she was talking about.”

“Ex,” I clarified.

I opened the passenger door for her, and she nearly fell into the seat with a shiver. “And the heater is full blast. Freaking awesome.”

I laughed, closing the door and walking to my side.

“Are you coming around to the seats?” I asked, sliding in.

Daisy’s big hazel eyes landed on mine, and a thrill ran through me. There was something about being so close to her that just lit up my world.

She chuckled and shook her head. “No. I still can’t get over that creeping sensation.”

I nodded in agreement and turned out of the parking lot. “I didn’t know you lived near me.”

“Well, I’m not on the lakeside. I’m across the street from the lake,” she said, turning to look at me. “But I’m only about four houses down, I think?”

“We could have carpooled to Madison.”
