“Yeah, I’m sure your girlfriend would have loved that. She seemed a little possessive.”

I chuckled. “Again, my ex, and yeah. I don’t think she really wanted me. She just didn’t want anyone else to have me either.”

Daisy laughed and shook her head. “Ugh. Relationships are so complicated. Count me out.”

Chapter Three

Daisy

I didn’t know which was worse, that I was out of a job and paycheck for the next couple of weeks, or that I had to ride in Hunter’s car for the second time in one night and act like I wasn’t ready to explode. It was like the man’s aura just pulled me into his world.

And that world wasn’t where I wanted to be.

I wasn’t into fancy cars, bling, and city living. I loved small towns, stuffing my Subaru with camping equipment, and getting away from it all.

Hunter obviously liked the opposite of all that, judging by his ex and his car.

I was pretty certain Brielle had lashes for her lashes, whereas I couldn’t even get the mascara to stay on my actual lashes.

Not to mention her clothes. They were always beautiful, albeit over the top for some celebrations. I chuckled, thinking back to when she took a tumble down the hill a year before at the apple orchard. Had she not been wearing six-inch heels disguised as boots, she might have made it down the hill, but what I remembered most was the way she treated Hunter when he came to her rescue. She took it all out on him, and by the time Millie had mentioned me working down for him in Madison, I think Brielle was ready to thump him.

So, to say that I was ecstatic to get home last night and put on my flannels would be an understatement. Not only did I need to thaw out, but I also needed to forget about Hunter.

Except that I couldn’t.

He’d mentioned he was headed back down to Madison in a couple of days, and I’d say the sooner, the better.

But I did owe him a batch of fudge before he left town.

One thing I didn’t like to do was go back on my word. A deal was a deal.

Christmas music rang through the air as I stared at the fudge, hoping it would set before the next snowstorm made its way here. Foxy was still on the outs, but she’d been towed to my driveway this morning, so I wanted to be able to walk over to Hunter’s house to deliver the fudge.

I glanced out my kitchen window and noticed two deer in my front yard, nosing the flakes from the night before. Giddiness washed over me as they lifted their heads and glanced in my direction. It didn’t matter that deer, fox, and turkey made my front yard their superhighway. I still got as excited about seeing them now as when I first moved here a little over a year and a half ago. I noticed the house across the street from me on the lakeside no longer had theFor Salesign out.

I sure hoped the new neighbors would be nice, whoever they were. There were times when I missed Silver Ridge back in Washington, but I'd needed a fresh start, and moving to be closer to the family I had left was perfect.

Both deer turned to look toward my driveway and bounded away. I quickly made my way to the front door and peered out the tiny window to see Millie marching up my sidewalk. Her eyes sparkled when they connected with mine. I noticed a small package in her hand and smiled.

“I see you made it home safely last night,” Millie said, waggling her silver brows as she made her way to my porch. “Any overnight visitors inside?”

“Millie, I can’t believe you asked that.”

“What? It’s no secret you’re a flirt, or at the very least, a talker.”

I scowled. “I did not sleep with Hunter Knox. Flirting is one thing. Being naked in the same bed is quite another. Besides, I haven’t flirted with him either.”

“What? No flirting? I wouldn’t blame you for wiggling your hips around him a little. Hunter’s a good-looking man, and it’s the holidays. Who doesn’t need a jolly old time?” Her eyes still twinkled with mischief. “You young ones are far too reclusive.”

I laughed, inviting her inside and shaking my head. “I’m not reclusive, Millie. I work at a bar and chat with people for hours a day. I volunteer at the animal shelter, and I even come to the Sunshine Breakfast Club when time allows. Speaking of, you’ve sent me on more matchmaking errands than I can even keep track of, and now I’m worried it’s payback.” I shut the door behind her.

“Speaking of, here’s the book we started. You need to get chapters one through eight read by next week.” She shoved a package in my hand.

I eyed the festively wrapped rectangle and smiled. I should have known I wasn’t getting off that easily.

Millie took a deep breath and closed her eyes. “Smells like chocolate.” She glanced at my kitchen counter, and her brows rose. “Just made some fudge, I see?”

“I did.”
