Amelia darted to her table, pulled something out of her large purse, and carried it over.

She set a stack of envelopes in front of me. “Are you JJ?”

“No.” Henry shook his head. “His name’s Daddy.”

Lucas looked at me, reached over the table, and picked up my son instantly. He took him over to check out the instruments of the band.

“Yeah. Maybe for Jerky James.” Her sister smiled, but the name shot through me like a lightning bolt. I hadn’t heard anyone call me JJ since my mom.

Amelia scowled and elbowed her sister. “What? Are we suddenly twelve?”

“These belong to you,” Amelia said softly, pushing forward a stack of papers. “And I’m sorry about bleeding on them.”

And before I could protest or tell them to take them back, the sisters spun on their heels and left the restaurant.

Lucas looked at me with surprise as he walked back with Henry, and I shook my head. “Don’t say a word.”

The band started playing as the pile of letters sat in front of me while I wondered in what cruel joke of a world would my mom leave me letters?
