“Good. Me too.”

Another fit of laughs drifted over. There was something about the sound of her voice that was so calming and so…

Familiar.

Lucas shot me a wry grin. “Should I go introduce us to the lucky ladies or…”

“Seriously. You’ve gotta stop.” I shook my head with a smile.

The place was getting busier, and the women’s laughter was drowned out by a band plucking a few strings of a guitar and the tap of drums beating faintly as they checked the microphones.

When the bartender came back to take our orders, I let out a sigh of relief. The sooner we ate, the quicker we could get out of here.

As I placed my order, the woman who’d been facing the other direction glanced over her shoulder, and my breath caught in my throat. She was gorgeous, but my chest tightened the moment she threw me a dirty look. Granted, it was kind of sexy, but it was no doubt a look of annoyance or anger or something.

“Why’s she mad?” Henry asked, cupping his ears with his hands.

“Who?”

“The girl,” Henry answered, pointing at the ladies when he removed his hands from his ears.

“Ah, she’s not mad,” I assured my three-year-old, but I wasn’t so sure myself.

Lucas grinned as the two women stood. “Well, it looks like we might have company.”

“Great,” I muttered.

Within seconds, they were standing at the edge of our table with both of their arms crossed over their chests.

“Are you James Edwards?” the one asked, who wasn’t the one I wanted to talk with.

“This is him. In. The. Flesh.” My cousin nodded like a bobblehead. “Is there something we can help you with?”

“Yeah. I’d like to know why you’re so rude and inconsiderate when all my sister wanted to do was return something to its rightful owner.”

My eyes widened in surprise. “I have no idea what you’re talking about.”

The woman scowled at me, and the sister cocked her head, looking baffled and embarrassed.

Henry slid his hand to mine. “Daddy?”

The women didn’t seem to notice that I had a short person next to me.

“The call earlier?” the woman pressed. “You hung up on her. My sister Amelia doesn’t deserve that.” She raised her hands, exasperated. “She took her evening off to ride all the way over here, and then you’re rude.”

“Oh, right.” The sudden knots in my stomach tightened. “I apologize. Things are often more complicated than most know, but I do apologize.”

Amelia. The name fit her so well. Her green eyes connected with mine, and I drew a breath. It would be my luck to be impolite to the one woman in the world who caught my attention.

“Amelia, I apologize. It was uncalled for to hang up on you, but I don’t have anything to offer.” I always wanted to set a good example for my son, and suddenly, things were taking a quick turn.

She scowled as her sister rolled her eyes. “I’m not trying to get anything from you. I don’twantanything from you. I just wanted to return something that I think belongs to you, and don’t worry about my sister Emily. She gets a little overprotective at times.”

I shook my head, unsure of what she possibly had that I wanted.

She put her finger up in the air and smiled. “One sec.”

“Where’s she going?” Henry asked.
