Page 3 of Christmas of Love

All the women were finding their seats with plates full of food, and my stomach sank.

First of all, Hunter probably didn’t even know I existed. I’d worked for him less than a month last Christmas, and he’d barely uttered a word to me. Instead of lookingatme, he lookedthroughme.

Second of all, I remembered Hunter all too well. If I were ever to have had a crush on an older guy, it would be him.

But I didn’t.

Sparkling blue eyes to match the rest of the Knox brothers. A carefree attitude that was infectious. A laugh that made my stomach flutter.

And his muscular build that left little to the imagination.

Ugh.

Hunter Knox.

I shuddered at the thought of him coming to my rescue.

And what if his on-and-off girlfriend was with him?

Another shudder ran through me.

Breanna. Or was it Briella? Maybe Cruella?

I couldn’t remember, but I did recall how mean and grumpy she was to anyone who happened to be within a ten-foot radius of her or Hunter.

Fun times.

“You know what? I’m totally fine. I’ll just go try to start Foxy again,” I assured Maya and Millie. I didn’t need a ride from Hunter. I didn’t need anything from Hunter. I didn’t need a holiday card. I didn’t need a job.

Maya looked surprised. “I thought you enjoyed working down in Madison. Did my brother-in-law scare you away?”

“I’m pretty sure I annoyed him. He barely looked at me when I was there. And he was the one who signed my paychecks.” I laughed. “So, I’m not sure he’d actually want to give me a ride.”

Millie chuckled and glanced over my shoulder. “Then it’s like a fresh start. You’re not his employee. He’s not your boss.”

I scowled. “What do you mean, a fresh start? There is no start. There was only an end. An end to my time bartending in the city. Besides, Hunter is just one of many obnoxiously good-looking men who mindlessly wander around Wisconsin.” I shrugged. “Not to mention, I’m sure he has a fantastic ego. But please don’t tell him or his brother that. I don’t want to hurt their feelings.”

“We won’t.” Maya’s lips were pressed into a thin line, and her eyes were as large as saucers as she stared behind me.

My shoulders slumped. “Hunter is standing behind me, isn’t he?”

Millie chuckled as Maya stood, rubbing her hands together before reaching for her coat on the chair. “Hey there, Hunter. Your brother has some beer for you to try.”

“Oh, yeah?” Sexiness dripped from his deep voice while I glared at Millie.

She knew he’d been there.

Millie chuckled and squeezed my hands. “Don’t you just love this time of year? Joy just bounces off the walls.”

“I don’t know about joy, but something is certainly bouncing around.”

Millie eyed the man behind me. “Hey, Hunter. Would you do me a favor?”

“Sure thing, Millie.” The roughness in his voice made my belly dip into a tingly mess.

I refused to look behind me.

This wasn’t good.
