“Uh, sure,” I told her.

I’d totally forgotten about the bazaar.

“Why do you suddenly sound glum?” Millie asked.

I laughed, recognizing my mistake. Never show a weakness to a Sunshine Breakfast Club member. “I’m not glum at all.”

Millie chuckled some more. “And here I thought you might be disappointed that you’re leaving Hunter early.”

“Leaving Hunter? I’m not leaving Hunter. I’m leaving his bar early, but that has nothing to do with Hunter.”

“You two would make such a cute couple.”

Boy, she was being far blunter about it than other times. Usually, she’d have people sneaking around, employing nefarious techniques to get things moving.

“Well, thanks. But I’m not in the market for a relationship.”

“Hogwash.”

I laughed, shaking my head. “Pardon?”

“You’re just being scared.”

“I’m not scared.” I let out a slow breath. “Okay, I might be a little scared of falling for him, or anyone, really.” I even kept my friendships at arm’s length.

“Have you ever baked a souffle?” she asked.

“Yeah. Why? You want one of those for the bazaar too?”

“No, but love is like a souffle. Sure, it has the potential to collapse, implode, or otherwise be an unpleasant experience, but what if…”

“What if what?”

“What if it doesn’t? Think about the joy it brings when you see that sucker rising. It’s growing until it’s nearly weightless and carries you through life’s hardships.”

“Are you talking about the souffle any longer?”

“This has nothing to do with Hunter, Daisy. But don’t be afraid to love.”

“I’ll try to remember that.” I glanced at the book. “And I’m four chapters into my reading assignment.”

“Perfect. You can Zoom in with us this week.”

I chuckled. “I figured I wouldn’t get out of it.”

“And one more thing, Daisy.”

“Okay.”

“Hunter might be obnoxiously good-looking, but he has a heart of gold. Just like you. I know your uncle can’t ever thank you enough for stopping everything you had going on in your life to help him out after his stroke.”

“That’s what family is for.”

“Not every family has someone like you, honey.” She drew a breath. “Do you know how Hunter wound up opening a bar in Madison?”

“I just figured he liked the city.”

“He actually finished up business school down there and looked up tremendously to one of his professors.”
