“How’d you know I wasn’t headed to the resort for a holiday party?”

Hunter grinned and shrugged. “Just a hunch. You were a bartender there before you came to Madison, so I assume you’re still one after you left.”

“I’ll let you two be. Drive safely.” She gave her brother-in-law a pat on the shoulder and smiled at me. “Thanks for taking Daisy to her shift. I'd better get back inside before Millie gets after me.”

“See ya later, Maya.” I waved and turned to Hunter. “If you don’t mind, I’m just going to give Foxy another try so you don’t have to drive me.”

His brows raised. “Pardon?”

My cheeks flushed. “Oh, sorry. Foxy is my Subaru. She died and wouldn’t start. That’s why I need a ride.”

He chuckled, and his eyes stayed on mine. “Maybe if you gave her a name with more dignity, she wouldn’t have died on you.”

My gaze sharpened on Hunter. “I’ll have you know that she was an absolute fox in her time.”

Hunter’s mouth curved into a perfect smile, and his gorgeous eyes narrowed on me. “Which decade was that?”

I slid into the seat and turned the ignition to hear absolutely nothing in return, and now I only had ten minutes to get to work.

He’d put the box in his vehicle, which happened to be next to mine, and stood next to my open car door.

Hunter winked and held out his hand for me. “Foxy doesn’t sound very lively. Let me get you to your job. Come on. We’ll get this sorted tomorrow.”

We?

There was no we about Hunter and me.

But whatever. I just needed to get to Buttercup Lake Resort.

I nodded, sliding my key out of the ignition before I gripped his hand and stood.

“Suddenly chivalrous?” I joked as his eyes caught mine.

“Must be the season,” he teased, dropping his hand from mine. “But I certainly didn’t make a great impression on you. I’m sorry about that.”

“Nah. You were fine. Just busy at the bar like you mentioned. Anyway, thanks for taking me. I owe you a coffee or something.”

“Don’t give it a second thought, but I think fudge was mentioned.” He opened the passenger door for me in his white G Wagon. “The seats should warm you right up.”

I chuckled, sliding into his SUV. “Oh, fancy.”

Hunter shook his head and climbed into the driver’s side. “This car wasn’t my idea, but Brielle insisted this wasthe onewhen my other car died.”

Ah, Brielle. That was her name.

I should have known it wasn’t Cruella.

“Well, the seats are very lovely.” Which was a total lie because the moment he started the SUV, the slow creep of warmth puddling underneath me made me think I’d drunk too much coffee and didn’t make it to the ladies’ room in time.

“I’ve never been into them, to be honest. I don’t like how it feels.” He glanced over at me as he pulled out of the parking lot. “It makes me think I’m pissing.”

I snorted and rolled my eyes. “You’ve always been one to be direct.”

He slowly pulled onto the main road. “Yeah? How should I have said it?”

I chuckled. “I don’t know. Maybe fib like I did and say you loved them.”

He chuckled, and I felt a sudden change between us.
