“Extremely.” She eyed me. “But that’s not why I’m here.”

“Okay, enlighten me.”

“Nick’s schedule is extremely unpredictable and leads us overseas more often than not.”

I nodded. “That sounds like your dream come true.”

Travel had always been a point of contention between us. If she could spend all her time anywhere but here, she’d be thrilled. It looked like she'd found her perfect partner.

“It’s fabulous. His apartment in Milan is to die for.”

I chuckled. “Don’t go doing that. So, what brought you back to Wisconsin? Isn’t Chicago where your base is?”

“It is, but we’re home for the holidays. His mom isn’t doing very well, and the doctors advised her not to travel. We’d planned on spending Christmas in the Alps.”

I detected Brielle’s aggravation at his mother for being ill. It brought me right back to how she ran our relationship. If her plans didn’t go precisely as she’d imagined, all hell would break loose.

“I’m sorry to hear about his mother. But I don’t know what any of this has to do with me.”

Perry slowly walked over, bringing some water for us. He left as quietly as he came.

“I have a son,” she said, analyzing my reaction.

“That’s amazing, Brielle. Congratulations. I’m sure you make a great mom.”

She shrugged. “I try, but I’m sure the nannies do better.”

I wasn’t sure what to say to that, so I just nodded and took a sip of water.

“I’m really happy for you.”

She let out a sigh. “Here’s the thing…”

I stared at Brielle as she nervously looked around the bar, and my heart started pounding for no reason.

“Nick and I started dating right after we broke up.”

Which was code that she was seeing him while we were still together.

“Well, pregnancies are like that. They can sneak right up on a couple.”

Her eyes darted to mine, and she nodded. “Maybe it would be better if I show you.”

Being that I had no idea where she was going with this visit, I just nodded.

She slipped her phone out of her purse and tapped the screen a few times.

“Nick has been a doll about the entire thing.” She shook her head. “A truly phenomenal fiancé.”

News to me, but congrats to her. I glanced at her ring finger and couldn’t believe I hadn’t noticed the whopping diamond on her finger.

“Congratulations on your engagement, but I’m sure he’s thrilled he has a son.”

She pursed her lips together and shook her head. “That’s the thing. It’s not his.”

Brielle placed her phone in front of me, and I looked down at the baby boy.

Goosebumps peppered over me as I stared into the little guy’s eyes.
