Oh, crud. I stepped right into that one.

“Hunter had sent me a text yesterday that he was going to be up here today, but I haven’t heard from him since.”

“I’m sure he’s just on the road.”

“Oh, there’s his mom now.” Millie elbowed me.

Hunter’s mom’s gaze skipped over Millie and landed on me, looking like a deer in headlights.

And that was when the pieces of the puzzle started to fit together.

Brielle was back in town, and nobody knew how to tell me it was over between us before it ever began.

Chapter Eighteen

Hunter

I felt overcome with emotion as I held my son. Brielle had left me in her hotel suite with a nanny while she went out to do some shopping.

The moment I found out I had a son, the world faded away. All I wanted was to meet the little man who'd already made the world a better place.

The first ten minutes of finding out that Brielle had our child without telling me brought anger, confusion, loss, and extreme euphoria compacted into one moment of realizing none of that mattered.

What mattered now was that I made sure I was always there for my son.

Tate.

Tate Knox.

As I held the little guy in my arms, I rocked him asleep while I sat in an uncomfortable hotel room chair and overlooked the city.

His pursed lips, steady breathing, and peach complexion made me wish I hadn’t missed so many firsts.

But I had to stay focused on the fact that I had him now.

He felt like a little potato in my arms, swaddled into a warm cocoon.

“He looks so content,” Amy said, smiling at me. She was one of Tate’s nannies. From what I could gather from Brielle, he had two.

“You think?” I asked, unable to take my eyes off him.

“Absolutely.” She hummed to herself as she folded Tate’s clothes, and I stayed still, worried I’d disturb him beyond the gentle sway of my body. The sound reminded me of Daisy, and my heart clenched.

How would she take this?

I didn’t even know where to start.

Just out of the blue, I'd turned into a father.

Tate’s Dad.

I smiled at the thought as I tried to memorize every little thing about him.

The sound of the electronic door lock buzzed through the hotel room, and I looked over to see Brielle coming in with several bags looped around her wrist.

She smiled at me and glanced at Amy, who made herself scarce.

“How’d everything go?” Brielle asked, taking a seat in the chair across from me.
