Maybe disconnect his heated seats when he’s least expecting it… possibly right before he’s about to pick up the other woman.

Hmph.

Hunter’s eyes flashed through my mind right before we kissed goodbye the other day. Warmth spread through me, and I shook my head.

“Nope. I don’t believe it. He’s not back with Brielle.” I grabbed the book out of Millie’s hands. “The book is back on.”

“No, it’s not.” Millie shook her head, grabbing it back.

I chuckled. “Yes, it is. We’re supposed to have chapters nine through seventeen read by Tuesday, and we had better all show up ready to discuss. And I’ll even have a report for you guys about… things.”

“Daisy, I rarely put my foot down, but I must. The evidence isn’t looking good.” She shook her head. “And I don’t want you and Hunter… I don’t want Hunter to sweet-talk you into engaging in a special waltz. You know, step into the ring before you’re ready. Or bake a cake without all the ingredients, if you know what I mean.”

I nervously laughed, trying to shove away the worry swelling through me about Hunter and Brielle. “I have no idea what you’re talking about.”

“Listen, I don’t want you to let Hunter plant his seed in the garden because he knows how to swoon the pants off you.” She stared at me, her eyes widening. “Oh, no. You two already…”

My cheeks flushed with embarrassment.

“That was the euphemistic tour de force of avoiding the sex talk if I’ve ever heard one.” Grace grimaced.

Millie shook her head. “That’s why you’re not thinking straight. You already let the tadpole into the pond. Don’t worry. I know how it goes. I jumped into the sheets with Jackson Sr. on date two, but that turned out just fine.”

Maya winced, hearing the news from her grandma, as I stifled a laugh and brought my gaze back to Millie’s.

“I believe in Hunter, and I’ll wait for his explanation.” I smiled, shaking my head. “And it had better be one hell of a good one.”

Millie straightened, looking extremely regal as she handed the book back to me. “You’re a better woman than I, Daisy.”

I smiled, shaking my head. “I’m just running on hope.”

Chapter Twenty

Hunter

I looked down at the text from Daisy, and I knew I needed to talk with her.

Rumors are flying around town, and I’m trying not to believe a single one.

I bit my lip as I studied the upside-down emoji sent at the end of the text. I think that meant she wasn’t worried about whatever she heard.

But I didn’t know what she’d heard. The only person in Buttercup Lake who knew about my son was my mom. I didn’t even let her tell my dad because out of the two, he had a bigger mouth.

And this wasn’t something I wanted to get back to Daisy without telling her first.

But why would there be any rumors flying if my mom didn’t say anything? I reached for my phone and texted her.

Have you told anyone about Tate?

She responded almost immediately.

Not a soul

I wrote back a thank you, put my phone on the counter, and walked over to the tree. Daisy’s photo dangling from the branch brought a smile to my lips. I missed her so much.

I had to tell her what was going on. She more than deserved to know, but it wasn’t like I could just take a selfie with Tate and me and send it on over.

I needed to tell her in person, explain the complexities and the confusion and everything in between, but I couldn’t just yet.
