I chuckled and shook my head. “That’s not quite how I see it.”

Millie’s expression remained stoic. “It’s true.”

I tipped my head. “Are you just playing off my stubborn side? Like if you tell me he’s not good for me, you’ll know I’ll go running to him?”

She chuckled and shook her head. “No, that’s a good angle to use, but I actually mean it.”

The tension in the room was building, and I couldn’t for the life of me figure out what was going on.

“Well, this is a bit of a pickle because…” I looked at all the ladies. “I really like him. We’re really connecting. In fact, I think he’s coming up here tomorrow.”

Millie shook her head. “I’m not sure he is, Daisy.”

I frowned and shook my head.

“Wait. What do you mean?”

I didn’t want to hear the name.

“I’m all about honesty.” Millie let out a disgruntled sigh.

“That’s comforting.” I nodded. “I am, too.”

Nobody said anything for a few seconds, and I finally couldn’t handle it any longer.

“Is it Brielle? He was meeting with her one last time at his bar. Is that it?” I looked at Maya and then at Millie. “Are they back together?”

Saying the words seemed surreal.

“We know Hunter is a little… immature,” Millie started. “But after this last year, I thought maybe he’d outgrown some of that.”

I shook my head. “He’s not immature. He’s responsible and caring.”

Millie put her hands in her lap. “I don’t want to be the one to have to tell you this, but my friend’s daughter saw Hunter walking into a hotel down in Madison with Brielle.”

It felt like the room leaned to the left, or maybe it was the Christmas tree that leaned.

Or was it me?

“Impossible.” I thought back to the words he told me when we’d slept together. None of it added up.

She shook her head. “I’m sorry. I just wanted to be upfront about it. Maya mentioned that you were onto us, and I thought the best way to go about this problem was to be frank.”

I nodded, realizing it wasn’t the room or the tree leaning. It was me, leaning against Nina. She pulled me close.

“Hunter’s a good guy. He just might have made a mistake,” Nina whispered.

Millie scowled. “That’s not a mistake. You don’t just accidentally roll out of a taxicab and into someone’s hotel room by mistake. That takes thought, determination, and… it’s just plain mean.”

But I knew Hunter was none of those things, and I was shocked his two sisters-in-law weren’t trying to get to the bottom of things.

“Cash can’t believe it. He’s so pissed at Hunter right now.”

I thought back to the funny look on Hunter’s mom at the bazaar. “Does his mom know?”

Millie grunted. “I’m beginning to think so because she’s been stone-cold silent. Not a peep out of her. No message was returned. Nothing. In fact, she barely spent any time at the bazaar.”

I sat up and let out a groan as I let my head fall into my hands. This was what breaking down my walls got me, but I couldn’t wait to let Hunter have it.
