She nodded. “But it’s only seven more weeks.”

I chuckled. “Yes, only seven.”

The sound of a vehicle turning down the drive made Emily shoot from the couch. “Oh, my goodness. Okay, now my nerves are shot.”

“How’d you go from as cool as a cucumber to completely destroyed in a matter of seconds?” I stood, pulling her into me. “You’ve got this.”

“I don’t got this.” She shook her head and pushed on her temples. “I really don’t got this.”

“You do, and I’ll be cheering for you every step of the way. Think back to Charles.” I let go of her and walked over to my bag, pulling out a fedora just like the one he wore.

I put it on, and she chuckled. “Should I wear it, or should you?”

She smiled wider. “You won’t believe this, but remember while we were there, and I told you I said, maybe you’ll get lucky tonight, but I was talking about the hat?”

“Yeah, I remember. What about it?”

She blushed and looked so damn cute. “I thought you had said to me, ‘You’re so cute. If only I could make you gasp like that’, not that you wanted a hat like that…”

I let her shift her weight a few times before chuckling.

“You want to know a little secret?”

“What?”

“That’s what I said.”

Emily burst into laugher and shook her head. “I can’t believe you, Lucas Edwards. You’d let me squirm like that knowingly?”

I laughed, tugging the hat over her head and pulling her close. “I love seeing you squirm.”

A horn honked twice, and I swept a quick kiss across Emily’s lips as her laughter eased and she gave me the hat back.

“You should be ashamed of yourself,” she teased, and I looped my fingers around hers as we made our way to Nadia’s car.

She turned to me and gasped. “I forgot my poems. I’ll be right back.”

I watched Emily dash back up to the cabin as I climbed into the backseat of the car.

Nadia introduced herself and smiled at me through the rearview mirror. “It’s nice to put a face with the man. She talks about you nonstop.”

“Really?”

“Indeed.” She grinned as Emily dashed our way and got into the front seat.

“It’s going to be a full house. The poetry readings are always a big deal in town.”

“Oh, great.” Emily laughed, putting her head against the neck rest.

“You’ve done readings before, right?” Nadia asked.

“No. Never.”

“Oh, wow. Well, you’ll do amazing. I’m sure with the beautiful night out, the crowd won’t be so big.”

I chuckled as Nadia smiled at me in the rearview mirror.

As she drove along the winding road, heading back into the town I’d only just driven through minutes ago, I could see why Emily fell for this place. It was majestic. The rolling hills, large peaks, and wide valleys created a picture unique to this region.
