“Sorry. I… I had three chapters left to read, and I was certain it was the brother.”

Everyone chuckled as Charles nodded in sympathy. “I’m only teasing. I would never give anything away like that.”

I covered my heavily beating chest and let out a sigh of relief as Lucas pulled me into him, dropping his lips to my ear.

“You’re so cute. If only I could make you gasp like that.”

Heat instantly flooded through me as my cheeks reddened. Every cell in my body ignited with the emotion I’d been hiding from him and myself.

I looked up at him as his eyes locked on mine and teased, “Maybe you’ll get lucky tonight.”

He looked at me, puzzled. “Wait. What?”

Mortification pulsed through me at a fiery speed.

Oh, no.

That wasn’t what he’d said.

“I need to pluck something tonight.” I ran my finger over my left brow, wishing I were a better poet.

“Uh, okay…” He glanced at my brows and whispered, “This is getting weird.”

My eyes widened, and I shook my head. “No, I mean… what did you say?”

Lucas leaned closer and whispered, “I said, if only I could wear a hat like that.”

Okay. So definitely not, “If only I could make you gasp like that.”

I clenched my eyes closed, bringing my attention back to the author. “Right. Totally. That’s what I meant. Maybe you’ll find one just like that later,” I whispered. “Who knows? You could get lucky.”

A smile touched Lucas’s lips, and he nodded, pulling me in. “Maybe.”

And that was why I never got to date number two, but thankfully, I wasn’t dating Lucas. Just creeping him out.

Charles picked up his latest novel and cracked it open as he began reading my favorite first sentence ever, but all I could think about was how much I wished Lucas had said that.

Chapter Four

Lucas

I looked around the bookstore and didn’t see Lydia as Emily looped her arm around mine and glanced up at me while adjusting her backpack.

She winked at me, showing me the author’s autograph before sliding it into her bag. “You are the best friend a girl could ask for. You know that, right?”

Chuckling, I shrugged. “Tell me again.”

“You’re the best friend a girl could ask for.”

I laughed, squeezing her closer before we made it outside. The crisp air hit my face as we stepped onto the sidewalk, so I pulled her tighter.

Spring in Seattle had a funny way of vacillating between winter and summer, and the temperatures were dipping quickly.

Her pink gingham shirt wasn’t enough to keep her warm tonight and the café was a few doors down. My eyes hoveredon her shirt a little too long when I noticed a couple of buttons undone. I tore my gaze away and focused on tonight.

I could still pull this off.

Tell her how I felt.
