Mae touched her chest and smiled, but Mimi wasn’t done. Once she got on a roll about her granddaughters’ love lives, it was all over. Mimi was completely the opposite of my other grandma, who’d passed away several years ago. My mom’s mom was more… mystic, less forced when it came to love and romance. Mimi was the exact opposite and very blunt, whereas my grandpa was less so. My dad was far more like him than my grandma. How all of these personalities worked out so well was beyond me.

“What you girls need to realize is that in this day and age, you don’t look for Mr. Perfect. You pounce on Mr. Good Enough.” Mimi scowled at me.

Mae nearly spat out her water. “Not quite how I see it, Mimi.”

My mom shook her head. “What we need to do is come up with a plan for your recovery that doesn’t involve marrying off your granddaughters to men who can carry you up your stairs.”

Mimi chuckled and hiccupped.

Her male nurse strode in with some medicine. He was at least six feet tall, muscular, and totally Mae’s type.

“You’re single, aren’t you?” Mimi asked her nurse.

“Now, Mimi…” The nurse winked at my grandpa. “I told you once already that you’re too young for me.”

Mimi giggled and scanned the room. “Fifty-five isn’t too young for you, but I am happily married.”

We all exchanged looks.

Fifty-five? How’d she shave off thirty years? And he has her chart.

The nurse scanned her wristband and asked her for her name and birthday as we all stared at one another in confusion. She was definitely medicated if she was trying to impress the nurse.

“How about dating one of my granddaughters, then?” she pressed.

“Mimi, tell me how you have two ravishing granddaughters my age when you’re only fifty-five. Didn’t you skip a generation?”

My mom stifled a laugh as Mimi blushed, and my grandpa grinned.

“All I’m saying is they’re single and ready to mingle,” Mimi tried again.

“Mimi, we’re not.” My cheeks reddened when the nurse looked over at me sympathetically and whispered a quick apology while mouthing the wordmeds.

“Where’s that latte?” Mimi asked, and I pushed myself off the wall.

“I’ll go get it. I saw a Starbucks down the street.”

The nurse spun around. “Actually, we have an amazing coffee shop downstairs.”

“No way,” Mae said, looking immediately interested. Her dream had always been to open a coffee shop, and on Monday, that dream was officially coming true. Her coffee shop was next door to the antique store with an opening between the two. It should have opened months ago, but as with most construction projects, there were… incidents. “I’ll come with you.”

“Maybe see if they have anything to forage?” my mom suggested. “I haven’t eaten all day.”

“Why didn’t you have dinner?” Mimi asked my mom. Her eyes were getting heavy from whatever medicine the nurse gave her.

“Well, when a call comes in that my mother-in-law has been rushed into surgery, I don’t really have time for a meal.” My mom chuckled.

Mimi closed her eyes. “Hogwash. There’s always time for a meal.”

She blinked them open and turned to me. “What about you two? Did you eat?”

Mae shook her head.

“I had some calamari,” I answered, which I immediately knew was a mistake.

“Oooh, fancy.” Mimi’s brows rose.

“She was on a date.” Mae flashed a wicked grin in my direction.
