Lucas was an incredible friend, and I appreciated him.

Like this afternoon…

Lucas’s action to go to all that trouble of planning this event and getting tickets, just for me.

But I knew it came through the lens of friendship, and it was vital for me to not let the murky waters of his dating life cast a veil over our interactions and pretend we could be more.

Clara popped into my head again, and I swallowed down my worry as the elevator opened on our floor.

We walked into Mimi’s room, and Henry was sitting on his dad’s lap as my mom and grandpa whispered not to wake up Mimi.

James smiled at my sister, and they traded that loving look that made me warm up inside. One day, I’d love to share that feeling with someone. My mom hopped up and grabbed the drink tray from me as we quietly spread the drinks and snacks along the window sill as James’s phone dinged.

He looked down and bit his lip and shook his head before showing his screen to Amelia. Her expression changed, and she shrugged at him before glancing over at me.

The text had to have been Lucas, and honestly, I had no right to get involved in his personal life.

Chapter Six

Lucas

Clara ran her fingers through her short blonde hair and took a step back, glancing at Emily as she left. I sat back down at the table, wishing I’d gone with Emily.

“Is that your girlfriend?” Clara asked.

It was none of her business.

I brought my gaze back to Clara.

“No.”

She let out a dramatic sigh and touched her chest as she slid into Emily’s empty chair.

“Thank goodness.” She smiled and brought her eyes to mine. “I haven’t known how to reach out to you.”

“Why would you?” I asked as the server brought our dinner over.

Before he could put Emily’s plate down, I held up my hand. “Would you mind putting that in a to-go box?”

The server nodded and went back to the kitchen as I picked up my fork and took a bite of asparagus.

“Well, a lot of time has passed. You know, it’s not like we’re getting any younger.” She kept her eyes on mine. Her gaze was unsettling.

Most men would probably find her attractive, but I knew what she was capable of and wanted no part of any of it.

I just wanted Emily, and I’d let her leave.

Out the door.

Without telling her how I really felt.

“So, what have you been up to all these years, Lucas?”

“Not much,” I said, bringing my eyes to hers as I cut my steak.

This girl wasn’t good at reading body language.

“Listen, I’ve wanted to apologize for a really long time, but…” She pursed her lips together. “But it just never seemed adequate over a phone call or a message.”
