I laughed. “So that’s what it would take?”

She nodded as I drank some of the water and looked at her butcher block island. “Where did you want me to roll this?”

“Over to the side so there’s more room for Mimi. I think closer to the window.”

I bent over, unlocked the wheels, and stood up. “That ought to do it.”

“What did you do?” she asked as I easily pushed it toward the window.

“Unlocked the wheels.”

She flicked her eyes to the window in annoyance. “I swear I did that.”

“Okay, next on your list?”

“Right this way.” She motioned for me to follow her down the hall to the bedrooms. She stopped in front of the spare room, which I’d seen a night or two when we’d lived it upa little too much. She’d managed to shove the guest bed into the center of the room, leaving enough room on both sides for her grandparents and Mimi’s walker. She’d had the bed shoved to the wall before like a couch. Three boxes teetered on one another.

“They look heavy.”

She grinned at me wickedly. “Oh, they are. They’re books. We’ll put them in the attic, but I’ll need you to help get them down for me when my grandparents leave. I don’t want them to get ruined.”

“Maybe I ought to help you find a boyfriend,” I teased.

“Blech.”

“What about that Rick guy?” I asked, trying to sound casual as I hoisted the first box. The box wasn’t actually all that heavy.

“He’s a nice guy,” she said, walking into the hallway.

I followed her as she stopped and reached for a pole that she used to yank down the ladder. Balancing the box on the steps, I made my way into the nearly empty attic and brought the box up.

“I think he might be into me,” she said, craning her neck up the stairs. “But I doubt he’d show up to date number two, either.”

My jaw clenched at the thought, and I let out a deep breath.

Making my way back down the steps, I hopped onto the floor from the last tread and turned to see her looking as cute as ever as she thought about what she’d just said.

But was she into him? This might be my only chance…

Without thinking, I stepped closer to Emily with her eyes locking on mine. And she smiled, and I knew I needed to kiss her.

Chapter Nine

Emily

Lucas moved a fraction closer to me. The air between us jolted with something new and thrilling with each passing breath. This wasn’t how friends behaved. Every part of my body felt charged from the heat behind his gaze.

His gaze.

He’d never looked at me like this before.

I swallowed down my worries as he took another step closer. His hand slowly moved up my spine, cradling my head in his palm.

“Lucas,” I whispered, feeling the need growing.

His eyes dipped to my mouth as my breath caught, and I prayed this wasn’t a dream.

“Pinch me,” I murmured, looking into his gaze.
