“It’s true, though.” A glimmer of hope flickered behind his gaze.

“What’s true?”

“That when I met you, things changed.”

He moved his hand over mine and squeezed it. “I mean it.”

“I appreciate that.” I nodded, swallowing down a lump of worry. Would we really be able to get back to what we had? “But actions speak louder than words. If you’d been that into me like you said, don’t you think your social calendar would have reflected that?” I straightened and shook my head. “But not my business.”

“Maybe things aren’t always as they appear.” He didn’t take his eyes off me. “And it’s not like I’ve been on any dates recently.”

I chuckled, pushing down the annoying sensation of jealousy trying to ride into my soul. I’d never been a jealous person, but hearing he hadn’t been on a date made me happy.

And it shouldn’t matter.

But it did.

He bit his bottom lip and let out a deep breath, and all I wanted to do was lean over and kiss him.

Again.

I squeezed my eyes shut and groaned. “This is going to be so hard.”

“What is?”

I opened my eyes and leaned my head against his shoulder. “Not thinking about that kiss, any kiss…”

“So, you’re saying that the kiss meant something.”

I laughed. “Obviously.”

“It did to me, too.” He glanced at me. “Now, to most normal human beings, that would be a sign.”

I didn’t say anything.

“You know, when two people find each other attractive, have chemistry, and have an amazing friendship, it can lead to something pretty incredible, and a lot of people would jump on that ride to see where it goes.”

I chuckled. “But I’m not most people.”

“Clearly.”

“Tell me about Clara,” I said, turning toward him and tucking my leg under me. “She seems a bit… infatuated.”

He smiled and laughed, looking uncomfortable. “She’s freshly divorced, and I’m just low-hanging fruit.”

I chuckled. “Huh?”

He shrugged. “It’s true.”

“That doesn’t really tell me about her, though…” My voice trailed off.

“I don’t know much about her now, other than what you heard from Lydia that day.”

I nodded, admiring his dance around divulging what I really wanted to know. I’d try another way.

“So, how many girlfriends did you have back in school?” I asked as a little breeze picked up. I shuddered from the chill, and he wrapped his arm around me.

“I had three,” he informed me.
