It was impossible not to imagine her naked, fitting into me as only Emily could. The thought nearly undid me as I heldher in my arms, our kisses only deepening with every passing second, every gust of the wind.

For just a moment, I let myself pretend that this could go somewhere. That maybe she’d let us take that next step.

And then Emily’s kisses slowed, her mouth parted from mine, and she rested her head on my chest.

“You bring it out of me,” she whispered, bringing her eyes to mine. “I’m sorry. That wasn’t nice of me. I’m sending mixed messages.”

I laughed, brushing some hair from her forehead. “That was very nice of you.”

She giggled, and the sound lit up my world.

Her green eyes stayed focused on mine, and the heat firing behind her gaze only stirred the wildness inside me.

Our eyes stayed locked on one another as I cupped her face in my hands and kissed her again, and this time, I wasn’t holding back. My mouth teased her lips, moving to her neck, feeling the softness of her skin as my breath skated across it.

Emily arched her back as I pulled her curvy hips into me and the rawness of my need was no longer hidden.

I let myself believe that circumstances were different as our kisses intensified and her breath hitched with the same desire I felt.

A car horn honked, breaking us apart, and Emily’s gaze landed on Amelia and James’s vehicle as it slowed down.

Amelia rolled down the window and waved. “About damn time.”

Chapter Fifteen

Emily

“You look absolutely rosy and bright,” Mimi said, eyeing me with a twinkle in her eyes. “I recognize that flush.”

I straightened in the dining room chair as I scooped mashed potatoes onto her plate. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

Mimi chuckled. “Right, of course. You don’t have a thing to say about anything.”

I glanced at my grandpa, who was staring at the roast chicken on his plate, holding in a chuckle.

“Very funny, you two.”

Turning my attention back to Mimi, I drizzled gravy on her plate and handed it over.

“You might not have anything to say, but that hickey on your neck says otherwise.” It was like she just couldn’t contain herself. Mimi chuckled as my hand slapped the side of my neck where Lucas’s lips were just yesterday.

“I…” Taking a bite of chicken, I stared at my grandma and swallowed. “I don’t know what I was thinking.”

“Maybe that’s the problem. You think too much.” Mimi cast a glance at me before looking at my grandpa. “If you overthink love, it becomes too complicated.”

“Love?” I spat out. “I’m not in love.”

“From all accounts, you’ve been going back and forth with him for a year. I’m surprised he’s stuck around this long.”

I futzed around with my napkin on my lap. “We’re just friends, Mimi. I messed up and kissed him. My fault. He completely understands. Problem solved.”

“You know that your other Grandma and I didn’t particularly get along, right?”

This was something we all knew and pretended wasn’t the case. Mimi was more outspoken, while Grandma Cecilia thought carefully about words.

Meanings.

Implications.
