Clara’s parents managed to arrive as my father greeted them both, and I just prayed Clara wasn’t about to show up next.

Clara’s mom eyed Emily with as much tact as expected before bringing her gaze to me.

“It’s been too long,” her mom said, smiling.

Not long enough.

“Indeed,” I said, nodding. “Everyone, I’d like you to meet Emily, my girlfriend.”

Clara’s mom traded a look with my own, and I realized this had been a setup, of sorts, to warm me up to the idea.

“Girlfriend?” my mom asked, touching her chest. “Since when?”

“I’ve been begging her for a year, but it’s only been recently that she’s accepted the role,” I teased, and Emily looked like she wanted to stab one of her heels into the top of my foot.

My mom cupped Emily’s face with her palms and nearly squealed, which wasn’t the reaction I’d expected.

“What are you going to tell all those women beating down your door?” my mom asked, suddenly looking askance at Clara’s mom.

Emily’s brows rose in amusement as she folded her arms over her chest. “Yes, do tell.”

I could feel Clara’s parents' eyes on us as I kept Emily’s arm linked through mine.

“I haven’t had to deal with that for quite some time,” I explained.

Emily tilted her chin in my direction and cocked a brow. “How so?”

James and Amelia walked up to the group with their drinks when my mom tapped Amelia’s arm. “They’re an item.”

“Indeed, they are.” James laughed.

“You knew and didn’t tell me?” my mom asked James indignantly.

“My son was just about to enlighten us about why he hasn’t had to deal with fending off women,” my dad explained.

“It’s never quite been like that,” I said, laughing.

“Oh, it’s been pretty close,” James said, chuckling as he took a sip of his martini. “But should I tell them or should you?”

Emily straightened. “Tell us what?”

“I haven’t been on a date in months.” My eyes stayed on Emily’s.

“Of course you have. You were on one a few weeks ago. You said something about her being a messy eater and having to run around all night after her.”

Clara’s parents gasped.

James laughed. “And you’d still stand here with him after he told you that?”

Emily giggled. “He has a good heart.”

My gaze locked on Emily’s. “I couldn’t even tell you when I’ve last been on a date.”

“I could.” Emily’s brows rose in satisfaction, and I wondered if maybe she’d felt something for me longer than she’d cared to admit to herself or me.

“All of this man’s dates…” James started as Amelia’s smile widened.

“I can’t believe you’re going to let out my secret,” I joked.
