She chuckled and nodded. “True.”

A few minutes of silence sat between us as we stood embracing.

“Your heart is beating fast,” she said, looking up into my eyes.

I nodded. “I think it’s the thought of losing you.”

“You’re not losing me.”

“No, you’re right. Wrong choice of words.” I bit my lip and let go of her as she moved toward the hallway.

I followed her lead and sat next to her on the couch in the gathering room.

“I won’t lie,” she said, moving her hand over mine. “I’m scared to death about leaving you… us.”

“Scared?” There were a lot of emotions I expected to hear, but fear wasn’t one of them. “Why’s that?”

“I’m worried you might… get bored.” Her eyes stayed locked on mine.

My heart clenched when I looked into her gaze.

Darkness rose in my blood, wishing I hadn’t been so cavalier over the years with women. Now, I had to pay for those choices because my history scared the one and only woman I’d ever loved.

My telling her I’d changed wasn’t enough.

And I wasn’t sure what was.

“I’ll wait however long it takes to get you back to Marigold.”

I thought about her grandpa’s words, she’s a flight risk, and clenched my jaw, feeling the selfish pull to keep her here.

I smiled, touching her mouth with my thumb, feeling the softness of the mouth I wanted to devour and feel pressed against my own.

“And if you don’t come back home, I’ll follow you wherever you go for as long as you’ll have me.”

Her expression softened as she touched my fingers still on her lips. “You mean that?”

“Every word.” I smiled. “But not in a creepy stalker, Clara way.”

She chuckled and nodded. “There’s a part of me that doesn’t want to do it, but I know if I don’t, in ten years I’ll wonder… what if?”

“The one thing I’ve learned after seeing my cousin battle certain things in his life is to never let your choices leave you saying those two words.”

Emily nodded slowly and sucked in a deep breath.

“So, you’ll wait for me?”

“Absolutely.” My voice lowered a notch as she climbed onto my lap. “Just don’t go falling for one of those poets who always know what to say. They can be tricky.”

A mischievous glint flicked through her gaze and a low rumble of a laugh escaped her lips right when her hand found my crotch.

“They couldn’t offer me the same level of satisfaction as you.” A sultry look floated through her gaze, and I couldn’t help but press my lips to hers.

Everything I’d loved about Emily was on full display.

She let out a little moan of happiness as we kissed, and I cupped her butt on my lap so she didn’t slide off the couch.

“I’m going to miss this,” she said between kisses.
