“Already?”

She smiled and nodded. “Just down this drive.”

As we drove up to the cabin, my heart pounded in my chest. The woods along the drive sheltered the cabin and tucked it away from the world. She turned off the car, and I stepped outside.

The profound silence swept through me, leaving an intense amount of serenity that I didn’t even realize I’d been craving.

Nadia shut her door and glanced over at me. “Beautiful, isn’t it?”

I smiled and nodded. “It’s magical.”

She pointed at me and grinned. “See? Right there. That’s what we want to capture from you.”

I shook my head, unsure of what she meant.

“You see the mysticism where others don’t.” She nodded. “But you’re right. This place is magical.”

I drew a deep breath, feeling the fresh air flow deep into my lungs, and I knew this was where I belonged.

Chapter Twenty-Two

Lucas

It was hard not to think about the words her grandfather told me—she’s a flight risk.

Well, she’d already forgotten to text me when she landed, and I suddenly started feeling like I was losing Emily before I’d truly had her.

But there would be nothing worse than losing her to regret, and I certainly didn’t want her to regret dating me and missing out on something to do for her personal growth.

I let out a deep breath and stared at the text I’d sent this morning.

Miss ya already. I’ve even started borrowing Oscar to cuddle with. Have fun!

I hadn’t heard back yet, and I’d sent it a couple of hours ago. But I knew she’d probably been swamped since she’darrived. Someone from the program was going to pick her up last night, show her the place she’d be staying, and take her to town for dinner.

She probably crashed in bed before she had a chance to send a text.

But I had heard through James that she’d texted Amelia last night, so I at least knew she was safe. That was my initial concern when I’d been met with silence.

I swallowed my own doubts and walked over to the foreman standing in front of the apartment complex we were rehabbing.

At least with Emily in Tennessee, I’d be able to throw myself into this nightmare of a project because there was no doubt this building needed me.

The previous owners of this complex were haphazard at best.

“You think we’ll get Building A complete by midsummer?” I asked.

My foreman, Todd, pushed his mouth into a frown. “As long we can get the contractors to show up. That’s been half the battle.”

I nodded in agreement just as my phone buzzed. Hoping it was Emily, I pulled it out only to be let down.

It was James. He could wait.

Joe, the assistant project manager, walked over, staring at my foreman with a displeased look.

There was tension in the air, and it wasn’t even eleven in the morning. I usually liked the organized chaos at buildingprojects, but this one had been the pits from the start. I pulled my hard hat down tighter as Joe cleared his throat.

“Plumber just pushed us out until Tuesday.” He gritted his teeth and shook his head. “We can’t just use this guy because he’s your wife’s cousin.”
