He frowned, worried about her. “Trouble in paradise?”

She made a dismissive noise. “He would rather spend it with his children. Which is fine and his right but I just…” she paused. “I just can’t stand Kyle. I feel bad for Ava though, she’s so sweet, why is she tying herself to him?”

Will sighed. “I don’t know. But the twins are cute, she sent pictures. I’ve told her if she ever wants to escape, she can come here.”

“That’s good of you. I hope she does, does it make me a bad stepmom that I want her to leave him?”

“No, that makes three of us,” Will chuckled.

“Speaking of, where is she?”

Will looked back towards the trailer. “She’s in the home, I need to go, it’s showtime.”

His mother squealed. “Ooh please send me pictures. I can’t believe I’m going to be a grandmother again!”

“Will do, see you in a few days, Mom. Love you,” he said.

“Love you, too.”

He put his phone back in his pocket and looked up at the stars, at the vastness of the night sky that he found so oddly comforting and wondered how he’d gotten so damn lucky. Since he and Rebelle saidI love you,he and his mother had worked at unpicking his contracts, selling off some of the businesses he was involved with and he’d found replacements for the charity boards he was on so no one suffered. It had taken a few months but together they had worked at securing him the life he wanted.

Now he looked after the shelter with Rebelle which kept him busy. They were expanding out to another city and the work that had come with it had been daunting, but he had found that new challenge to sink his teeth into.

Life with Rebelle was more than he could have ever wished for. She challenged him, soothed him, dominated him and best of all, she needed him.

The door to the home swung open and there she was.

“Hurry up, you’re going to miss it!” she snapped, his favorite frown on her face.

He almost laughed but instead just smiled at her and watched the frown instantly dissolve.

“Damn that stupid award-winning smile,” she muttered, shaking her head, and went back inside.

He made a quick stop by his car and grabbed the box that contained a single black rose, her Christmas present. Well, one of them anyway. He was beginning to worry the other wouldn’t appear in time.

When he was inside the house, he stowed the box behind the couch in the living room. “You didn’t see anything,” he said to a snuggling Bryan and Parfait who were relegated to the living room for this evening.

He took a seat on the bedroom floor beside Rebelle, stroking a hand down her back. “How’s she doing?”

“Okay so far. You nearly missed it though,” she grumbled, folding her arms across her chest.

“It’s only just started, we’ll be here for hours yet,” he laughed, pulling her into his arms and kissing the top of her head.

There was a mewl from the pregnant tabby, Princess, laying in the cardboard box, squirming on her blanket as her belly clenched with a contraction. Last time Will had watched a cat give birth, he’d been petrified and wishing Rebelle were here with him. Now, she was here and he knew what to expect and couldn’t wait for Rebelle to experience this.

“Do you think they’ll be here by midnight?” Rebelle whispered.

He nodded. “I think so. Christmas kittens, what more could anyone ask for?” He grinned down at Rebelle before dropping a kiss on the tip of her nose. She ran her fingers through the stubble on his jaw and pressed their lips together. He nibbled at the seam of her lips until they parted letting him inside and she pulled back abruptly.

“Your mom!”

He arched a brow. “That’s who you’re thinking about right now?”

Her frown slid into place. “No, we need to tell her what’s happening.”

“Already done it.”

Her frown disappeared and she snuggled up against him and they quietly sat, soothing Princess when she began panting.
