She cleared her throat as something hot bloomed inside her. “Oh, well, that’s good to know, I guess.”

“It was amazing, illuminating, like you,” he said, softly. Her insides twisted at his words. He enjoyed what they did. Hewantedit like that. Her knees turned weak after she realized they had both enjoyed last night.

“When can we do it again?” His voice deepened and her mouth ran dry at the way his eyes darkened with heat. He was a stunning man, so contradictory. Tall and far too strong, his body covered in tattoos. He was bright and happy but could be hard and stubborn, determined to get what he needed. Yet he was soft on the inside and wanted to relinquish all control to her.

She was suddenly eager to explore with him, to throw off the shackles and experiment with pleasure but she couldn’t. It was a slippery slope. She didn’t want to get attached, to rely on him or any man again. She had experimented with her desires, and it had been amazing but that was all it could be. The shelter was what mattered to her, above everything else and she couldn’t let a dalliance with a gorgeous billionaire get in the way of that.

“We can’t. Will, it was a mistake, we work together. The shelter is my priority, and I won’t let anything get in the way of that.” She paused, worried what his response would be, and his smile briefly lost some of its wattage but then returned full force.

“I completely agree, the shelter is the priority, and I don’t plan on doing anything to change that,” he said calmly.

She narrowed her eyes. He was taking this much better than she thought he would. Maybe after all the pretty words from his pretty lips, he wasn’t that interested in her after all.

“Great, then I guess we can just go back to normal,” she said, placing her hands on her hips. Bryan came up behind her and nudged her.

“Sure,” he replied, rocking forward on the balls of his feet. She didn’t like his cheerful exterior, he was plotting something, she could feel it. He eyed her as he ran his tongue over his bottom lip and her eyes were glued to it.

“It’s feeling a bit warm today, don’t you think?” he asked nonchalantly. His hand skimming up his body and loosening the top button of his shirt.

“Not at all, it’s actually very cool considering it’s fall,” she replied, her eyes shifting away from the hollow at the base of his throat that was now exposed. She realized what he was doing. He was not the type of man to give up at the first hurdle, but she wouldn’t be moved.

He began lifting the giant bags of dog food from the newest delivery and moving them from one side of the room to the storage area. Lifting two at a time, the muscles of his forearms flexing, the material of his shirt straining to contain his biceps. When he caught her staring, he shot her a wink.

She bit her cheek. “I know what you’re doing.”

He faced her, a mischievous smile on his lips. “Oh yeah? What’s that then?”

“You’re trying to turn me on. You think it’s sexy that you have muscles? That you can pick up and put down heavy objects?”

“You think my muscles are sexy?” A teasing note had entered his voice.

She ignored his statement. “You’re not impressing me.”

The corners of his mouth quirked, annoying her. “I’m not trying to.”

“I’m not finding you attractive.”

He prowled over to her, caging her against the table so she couldn’t move. He bent down, hovering next to her ear. “Methinks thou doth protest too much.”

She looked him dead in the eyes, trying to ignore the delight banked in them. “Methinks thou art deluded,” she said, shoving him away and ducking her head, trying to hide her reaction to him. She spun on her heel and headed into the kitchen, his deep chuckle following her.

She fed the cats and rearranged the medicine cabinet for the animals before she cleaned the kitchen top to bottom.

“You didn’t forget, did you?” Will said from behind her, making her jump.

“Forget what?”

“It’s the charity ball this weekend. Have you got a dress?” he asked.

She stilled. “Why would I need a dress? I’m not going.”

He scoffed. “You’re the owner, you can’t not go.”

“Okay, let me rephrase, I don’t want to go,” she shrugged.

His hands clamped down on his hips. “Why don’t you want to go?”

“Because that’s just not my scene. I’m not one of them and I never will be.”
