“I assume there’s nothing I can say to dissuade you from getting involved?”

“If you wanted that, you shouldn’t have called me.”

“Fair enough.” He sighs again. “But the main reason I called was to ask how you wanted to handle your missing men. Do you want me to put out an APB on them and your fiancée?”

I consider the offer. “Not yet. There are search tactics my family can use that police can’t.” But they won’t work if word gets out that we’re looking for Nolan and Liam.

“I assumed as much,” Gasso replies. “I’ll reach out if the officers discover anything of importance at the gallery. In the meantime, all I ask is that your family is discreet while they work.”

“We’ll do our best to keep the mess to a minimum,” I promise. “And we’ll clean it up ourselves if required.”

The police commissioner grunts his reluctant thanks and then ends the call.

A knock at the door follows, and Jane enters the office. She takes one look at my expression and stiffens. “What did the commissioner want?”

“Catarina is missing.”

“What?”

“As are Liam and Nolan.” I gesture to the corner where Joseph is still barking orders on the phone. “Joseph is arranging a search.”

“Christ, Declan.” Jane crosses the office until she stands in front of me. Worry pulls at the corners of her eyes. “What is the plan? What are we going to do?”

“We’re going to find whoever dared to touch my fiancée,” I reply coolly even though hot fury courses through my veins like an uncontrolled wildfire, burning away any hint of restraint or mercy. “And then I’m going to destroy them.”

Chapter16

Declan

Four Years Ago

I take one step inside an abandoned warehouse very similar to the one where I had my first middle of the night meeting with Enrique Santiago more than six months ago. I immediately halt when I see the scene in front of me.

A card table and four chairs are overturned. Food litters the floor. Boxes and crates are broken and lying on the floor. Distinct holes pepper the objects, as well as the walls and filthy windows.

Gunshots.

I take it all in, and my muscles tense. I prepare for an ambush, my hand already reaching for the pistol tucked against my back. That’s when I see a figure lying on the ground near the overturned table.

My blood runs cold.“Fuck.”

Even covered in blood, the man is recognizable.Antony Salvatore Furnari, heir to the Italian Furnari crime family.

“I see you realize our predicament.” Enrique Santiago steps out from behind a stack of dilapidated crates. Alone.

“What the fuck is this, Santiago?” Is the leader of the Latino gang going to try and pin Furnari’s murder on me?

Fuck that.

I’m not going to go down for this shit.

My fingers twitch, itching to take out my weapon when the old man says, “Do you remember the sting operation you agreed to help me with?”

My jaw ticks as I think back to our most recent conversation.

When I agreed to help Santiago deal with the lowlifes carrying out unapproved business in his territory, I had no idea it would turn into helping him shut down a sex trafficking ring.

I’d been sick to my stomach when the gang leader finally told me what had been in that shipping container sent out under his name all those months ago. Or rather, whohad been in the container.
