“Stop fighting me, Catarina, and this will go much easier for you,” Myles hisses.

“Why?” I bite back, trying to ignore how my eyes sting with tears of pain and frustration. “Why would you do this? What do you think the gang will give you to make this betrayal worth it?”

He pulls my head back so I’m forced to meet his eye. Spittle flies from his mouth, “You know nothing. Declan is the traitor. I tried to warn you, but you stayed with him anyway.”

He’s talking about the allegation Declan had something to do with Antony’s death, but I’ve come to realize that even if it’s true, there’s more to the story that Myles is choosing to keep to himself.

“Colin MacKenzie will never forgive you for this,” I tell him in a hard voice.

Myles laughs. He looks deranged. “Colin willthankme. I’m saving the family from the Furnari’s wrath.”

“By abducting me?” It’s my turn to laugh. Though, mine is completely devoid of amusement. “You’re delusional, Myles. This will only end one way for you, and that’s with a bullet between your eyes.”

His brow lifts at the violent threat. “So the kitten has claws. Who knew?”

This kitten wants nothing more than to claw his eyes out, but I settle for a glare. I don’t know how long it will take, but Myles, Luis, Isaiah and everyone associated with them will pay for what they’ve done to me today. And I can’t wait to see it.

“What the hell do you think you’re doing?” Luis snarls.

Myles loosens his grip on my hair enough for me to turn and see the man limping down the hall towards us, injured. Dark liquid stains his left pant leg. I fight the urge to smile.

“You were supposed to get her out of here,” he growls at the man holding me captive.

Myles doesn’t attempt to explain himself. He just nods and pulls my hair. I stumble with an awkward gait but have no choice but to keep moving if I don’t want my hair ripped from my scalp.

We turn left and come to a metal door. Luis brushes past us and shoves open the door to reveal a stairwell. He walks down first. The gun in his hand is held at eye level, ready to fire. Myles shoves me in after him.

The air turns musty the farther down we go.

We reach the basement level, and the only sound that greets us is the water dripping from leaky pipes overhead. The light is dim down here, but I can see the stain on Luis’s leg has grown in size. With any luck, he’ll pass out from blood loss. But I doubt I’ll be that fortunate.

A boom echoes through the room, coming from the floor above. Pieces of the ceiling fall. Myles shoves me against the wall to shield us from the debris.

Luis keeps walking. “Come on,” he shouts. “We’re nearly to the car.”

Panic spikes. I can’t allow them to move me to a second location. That’s “how to escape an abduction” 101.

Myles shoves me and then snatches my hair. I cry out when his grip keeps me from landing on my hands and knees. He pulls back, and I cry again.

“Shut up!” he hisses.

I see red through my tears, and I act without thinking.

My hand rears back and I slap Myles across the face with all the pent-up hatred I’ve been harboring for him almost since the moment we met.

His head snaps to the side. The surprise of the attack causes him to let go of my hair, and I drop to the floor. That’s when I find a metal wrench on the ground next to me. My fingers wrap around the rusted metal handle.

“You little bitch.” Myles dives for me.

Without hesitation, I swing. The wrench cracks against his temple. His blue eyes blow wide with shock before they roll back in his head. He slumps forward and knocks me back. I lose my balance and land on the ground with him on top of me.

Another explosion booms above us.

Debris falls. I close my eyes to protect them but wince when a piece hits my exposed arm. I tuck them as close to my body as I can, using Myles’s unconscious body as a shield.

A string of Spanish curses reaches my ears just before the weight of Myle’s body is lifted off me. Disoriented, I don’t realize I should run for it before Luis’s gun is in my face. “Get up, Catarina. Now.”

I blink at the man. His suit is ruined. His hair is disheveled, and there’s a wild desperation in his gaze. This night did not go the way he planned. Now, he looks like a cornered animal. And I know that makes him even more dangerous.
