“Mhm.”

“Well, then it’s a good thing you’re not getting it back.” Ella wrapped her arms around herself. It was a good thing that even in her state, she still managed to joke around.

“Keep it,” I agreed. It looked better on her, anyway.

I looked back at her bed. “Do you have clean sheets anywhere?”

Sitting on the edge of her desk, she nodded, directing me into the closet. Ella remained quiet as I stripped away her sheets, replacing them with new, clean ones. Once I finished, I began unpacking the rest of the things I’d brought.

I placed the bottle of Gatorade on her nightstand beforehanding her the flu medicine I’d gotten at the store. “Take this,” I instructed.

“Bossy,” she whispered, but complied, drinking it down with the blue liquid.

With the flirty remark lingering in my thoughts, I retrieved my sweats from my bag in a hurry. “I’m gonna change into something more comfortable.” I didn’t exactly want to wear jeans as I took care of her. “Be right back.”

Ella pulled back the clean sheets of her bed, and I nodded, glad that she was letting me take care of her. I’d let her sleep for a bit, and then I’d make her some soup later.

Heading down the hall to the singular male bathroom—there was one on each floor for guests—I swapped out my pants for the gray sweats and pulled on my sweatshirt.

Before I left, I pulled out my phone, typing out a text to my VP, Stellan. Even when I was disorganized, I knew I could always count on him to get things done.

Cam

Everything going okay?

Stellan

Yeah, man. How’s your girl?

Cam

She’s got some sort of bug.

Just going to stay here with her in case she needs me.

Sorry to miss the event.

I held back the reply that she wasn’tmygirl, because I didn’t want to deny it. That was what I wanted, even if she’d fought me at every single turn.

When I got back to her room, leaving my folded jeans on the floor, still holding the other bundle I’d brought back from the bathroom with me.

Climbing onto the bed, I settled in behind her, letting her rest her head against my chest. “Cameron—” she protested weakly. “I’ll get you sick.”

“Shh, baby. Just let me take care of you, okay?” I brushed the hair off her sweaty forehead, dabbing at her skin with the wet washcloth.

She nodded, snuggling into me further. “Okay.” Her word was barely audible, but I heard it all the same.

“I’m sorry for making you miss it,” she whispered.

“I’d rather be here.” It was an admission I couldn’t afford, but I’d said it, anyway.

“Mmm,” she agreed sleepily, and I watched her eyes close as I traced my finger over her cheek.

Beautiful. Even like this, hair damp against her pillowcase, drowning in my shirt, skin flushed from fever, she was as beautiful as ever.

I placed a kiss on her forehead, wondering how I’d gotten so lucky as to find her.

Wondering how the hell I was going to keep her.
