“Why?” His eyes bugged. “Jesus, Ella. Why do you think?”

I didn’t know. Or maybe I just didn’t want to think about it, because then I’d have to confront more uncomfortable truths.

“Here.” He placed the tray on my lap. “Eat.” I surveyed the food. Oatmeal, a bowl with pineapple, strawberries, and raspberries, and a little mandarin orange that had been peeled. Even all the little white stringy bits had been taken off. On the side was a mug of tea, a cold water bottle, and another little pack of flu medicine.

“How’d you do all of this?” Sure, we had some stuff in the kitchen, but…

He looked suddenly shy. “I asked Richard for Ilene’s number.”

“Your advisor?”

Cam nodded. “Yeah. She knows you’re sick. And that I’m taking care of you.”

“Oh.”

She knew he was here.

He’d taken care of me, and he’d made sure my house mom knew, too. Never mind that we were breaking the rules.

I looked down at the oatmeal, my eyes swimming with emotion. Did he know what he was doing to my heart? I doubted it. “Thank you.”

Spooning a mouthful of oatmeal in my mouth, I ate as Cam moved around my room, cleaning up.

“I would have emailed your professors that you couldn’t make class today, too, except I don’t know your password.” Ithought I detected a faint pink hue on his cheeks. “Or what classes you have.”

“Is this your way of asking me for my class schedule?” I snorted, even though the action was a little painful. I really did acheeverywhere.Ugh.

“I certainly wouldn’t saynoto it,Princess.”

Rolling my eyes, I reached for my phone. “Not happening.” Never mind the fact that the semester was almost over, anyway.

And that giving him my schedule felt way too much like being in a relationship, and we definitely weren’t doing that.

“This is the absolute worst time to get sick,” I groaned. “I have so much going on in classes this week.”

“They’ll understand.” Cam came over, brushing my bangs off my clammy forehead.

“You should really go,” I whispered. “I’ll get you sick.”

“Trying to get rid of me so soon?” He took the tablets off the tray, peeling off the back and waiting till I held out my hand to dump them in it. “I had the flu shot. I’ll be fine. Besides, I hardly ever get sick.”

“Spoken like a true man,” I grumbled.

He cracked a smile. “I was beginning to think you’d forgot.”

My face flushed as I took a deep inhale of the hot tea, spluttering it all over myself.

“Charming.” I narrowed my eyes.

He grinned. “There’s my Princess.”

“I’m notyours.”

He shrugged, handing me a napkin to clean up my chin and not saying another word as I finished the tray of food.

After I’d finished, he brandished my laptop, and after I’d sent out a few quick emails to my professors, I could already feel the exhaustion settling back into my bones.

Like the only thing my body wanted to do wassleep.“Don’t you need to go to class?” I said with a yawn.
