I leaned back against the railing, taking the time to stare athis face. That sculpted jaw, those cheekbones—and those eyelashes which should definitely be illegal, because it was unfair that his were so pretty while I had to apply layers of mascara onto mine.

“Ella.”

“Hmm?” I was still staring at his face. Wondering how I could get him to kiss menow, not in five minutes. Or four. Whatever we were down to.

He laughed, lowering his mouth so they were only inches apart, ghosting his lips over mine. “It’s not midnight yet.”

“Tease.” I huffed, pushing off of him and walking towards the bridge that crossed the river of the property.

Staring down at the water, I focused on the moon’s reflection, only looking up when I noticed Cam’s form joining me.

Cam draped his jacket over my shoulders as I shivered, staring out over the bridge over the large pond.

“It’s beautiful,” I murmured, even though I felt like I could see my breath. But the world was quiet, still—gorgeous, under the moonlight and in a slight layer of frost.

“Yeah,” he agreed, and then I felt a finger running over my cheek. When I looked up at him, his gaze was squarely focused on me, not our surroundings. “Very beautiful.”

“What time is it?” I breathed, knowing we were too far away from the party to hear the countdown.

Not caring one bit, because there was nowhere I wanted to be but here.

Cam chuckled as he looked down at his watch before pulling me close.

“Happy New Year, Ella,” he murmured, kissing me softly.

The kiss I’d waited all night for. Maybe even my whole life for.

I curled my fingers into his hair, tugging his mouth back down to mine. “Happy New Year, Cameron.”

With any luck, this next year would be my best yet.

CHAPTER 26

Cam

Driving down here was worth it. Of fucking course it was.

But seeing her face light up as she saw me, realized I was there, and ran into my arms… that was fucking priceless.

Even if I had to leave soon to get back home, it was worth every minute I’d spent in the car.

For that New Year’s Kiss alone, I’d do it all over again. We’d curled up on a bench near the cute little bridge after we’d finally parted from each other, lips swollen and breaths ragged.

A river ran through the property, giving us the perfect backdrop of water running and crickets chirping in the quiet of the night—only disturbed by the occasional firework still being set off nearby. The lawn behind us was perfectly manicured, and if the rest of the details hadn’t indicated the country club’s status, the golf course visible in the background would have.

But in this moment, I was just appreciating my girl, sitting with me, because nothing else mattered. Christmas with my parents had been quiet and uncaring, but her texts had gotten me through.

Ella’s legs were folded over mine and her hands rested in my lap like we were greedy for each other’s touch.

She was still wearing my suit jacket around her shoulders, over that sparkling fucking dress that felt like it belonged at a nightclub, not some country club new year’s party.

If there was any sign of how irrational I was with this girl, it was how much I enjoyed seeing her wrapped up in my jacket. How big it was on her.

How much I liked holding her, just like this. I ran my thumb over her knuckles, feeling a shiver run through her body.

“I should go,” I murmured, sliding my hand over her hair. “I have to drive home.”

Ella looked up at me, her lips pulling down into a frown. “Stay,” she insisted. “The roads aren’t safe.”
