She gasps, taking a couple of steps back to sag weakly against her kitchen Island. “Oh, my God, Ezra. Haven’t you ever heard of protection? A condom? Mommy didn’t give you a lecture about the birds and the bees? How could you get two women pregnant at the same time, youman whore!” Her blue eyes expand in horror as she shudders. “Aren’t you scared of contracting anSTD? And you’re worried about my coffee addiction, what about you?!”

I can’t help it, I start laughing. It’s pretty ironic that after giving her a lecture when she started high school about sex and how to protect herself–to our parent’s horror–she’s the one lecturing me now.

“It’s not funny, Ezra!” she shrieks, narrowing her eyes angrily.

“If you think about it, it is a little funny.” I point out still laughing and she growls, taking an angry step toward me with her hand raised. I take a quick step back, raising my hand up in surrender.

“And for your information, I only got the one woman pregnant. But thank you very much for the lecture, Andie. I’ll be more careful going forward.” I take my phone out of her hand and slip it into my pocket.

She eyes me suspiciously, “Only one woman? But you said two babies…” she gasps, “Oh my God, twins!”

“Yup. Which brings me to why I’m here. I texted you last night to be ready by nine, but I should’ve known you wouldn’t be. I need your help.”

“Whoa, hold on. I’m still trying to wrap my head around your shocking news. Who is she? Do I know her? How far along is she? Are you in a relationship or is this a baby mama situation? Are you in love? She’s probably using the babies to sink her hooks into you and lock you down!” Her voice goes up sharply with the last statement, her breathing is erratic and honestly, I’m a little scared of her right now.

“Shh, relax. Yes you know her. I don’t know what we are yet, but I’m trying to get her to marry me, and no she isn’t trying tosink her hooks into mewith the babies. Quite the opposite in fact.”

“You don’t know women, they say one thing but want something else entirely. It’s a strategy!”

I go still when I hear a car door slam outside. “Listen, Andrea, that’s probably Autumn. I need you to keep quiet about it. I’ll tell everyone else at dinner next week.”

“So, I’m the first person you’ve told.” She preens a little, pushing her hair off her face as she grins up at me.

I pause as I glance down at her face. Sheisthe first person I’ve told. “You’re my closest friend.”

Her grin widens as she walks toward me. “Aw, am I your bestie, Ezra? Do you looooove me?”

I press my palm on her face and use it to push her away from me. “Fuck off. Now will you listen to me?”

“First tell me who the woman is,” she demands. The little piece of shit.

“Charlotte Square. Happy? Now back to the favor. I have a house outside of town I want to renovate. I can’t keep staying at a hotel now that I have a small family to protect.”

“Hold up, hold up!” she shouts, waving her hands around frantically. “You got Charlie pregnant?!”

CHAPTER 15

EZRA

Iclamp my hand over her mouth, glaring at her. “Shut your fucking mouth, Andrea. Do you want the whole street to hear?” Her eyes narrow angrily but she nods in understanding, so I slowly lift my hand away from her face.

“I’m sorry I shouted. I was just surprised.”

“It’s fine, I–” I stop when her doorbell rings. “That’s probably Autumn. She’s also here because of the favor I want to ask you.”

“Renovating a house?” she asks as she walks away to get the door.

“Yes!” I call out after her. I make myself comfortable on one of the stools as I tap on my phone’s screen to check if Charlie’s has replied to my message. No response. The low chatter of voices makes me glance up. I stand when I see Autumn and Andrea approaching.

I hug Autumn, placing a kiss on her cheek. “Thanks for coming on such short notice.”

She grins at me, pushing her glasses up her nose gently. “It’s fine, Ezra. Now where is this place with the disaster of a garden? I have to be honest: I’m really excited to see it and get started.”

“Unfortunately, we have to wait for Andrea to get ready before we can go.”

“Oh, she’s coming along?”

“Yeah, what? I’m coming along?” my sister asks, placing her hands on her hips. Her wiggling brows let me know she’s just teasing.
