“You should have seen her that morning, Derek. I’ve never seen someone look so utterly broken, and I’ve been staring at you for the better part of a decade now.” I wave at his surly face.

“Ha fucking ha, dipshit. I’m serious. Get your ass off the stool, head into Fetterman, andkindlyget her to talk to you.” He’s menacing at times.

“I’m not gruff like you or Roper,” I snap.

“No shit. You have a way of calmly talking to people, especially if they’re upset. Obviously, whatever happened between you two that night freaked her out. So do what you do best and run your mouth.”

“Maybe it was seeing your dick.” Brandon, our long-not-so-lost pack mate who just got home from the military takes a seat next to me and slaps my back.

“There was nothing wrong with my dick.” I lift the bottle again but remember it’s empty.

Fuck, I need another drink.

No, you don’t. We need our mate.

“Right, keep telling yourself that, Pretty Boy.” Brandon’s slap nearly sends me into the bar top.

“Fuck off.” I’m finding myself saying that more and more lately. I wonder if I’m turning into the new Derek. “My dick and our performance were perfect, for your fucking information.”

“Whatever you say,” they respond together.

“I’m being serious here!” Derek barks, drawing our bickering asses to face him. “Learn from my fuckup.” He slaps the counter and rattles the bottles and glasses on it. “Get off your ass and get the fuck out of this bar before it’s too late.”

“You heard the man.” Mason’s deep, commanding voice comes from behind me. Brandon and I turn to find our alpha and Roper standing side by side near the tables. The bar is mostly dead at this time of day, leaving the five of us to have a pack moment.

What the fuck is that supposed to mean?

I don’t have a fucking clue. Maybe the liquor is actually getting to me.

Bullshit.

“Mase?” I ask my brother.

“Get out of here, Miles.” He rarely puts any alpha power into a suggestion, but he’s doing so now. My body moves out of my seat before my mind can register it. “You’re going to break the bar if you don’t. Rylie says Alexa is down. Now go to yourmate and figure this out because mine won’t be happy until she knows her friend will be okay.”

“I see how it is.” I huff because it’s me, and I can’t resist. “Put your mate above your own brother.” I mock a scoff. I’m messing with him, but he fails to see my humor.

He walks up to me, grabs the back of my neck, and guides me out the back door, where my Jeep waits sadly. “Figure it out and then make it better, Miles. For once in your life, act mature and take care of someone other than yourself.” With that, he shoves me, leaves, and slams the back door against my ass.

“What the hell do I even say to her?” I wail at the closed door.

We’re proud but not above begging, especially for our mate.

Fine.

I’d much rather go in with a game plan, but seeing as I can’t seem to figure anything out with Alexa, and Rylie isn’t being very forthcoming with information, claiming she doesn’t know anything, I might as well wing it.

After getting in my Jeep, I head to Fetterman.

Maybe I should get her flowers?

Good idea. What is her favorite kind?

“Fuck, I don’t know.” I’m really shitty at all this. Shouldn’t that be one of the first questions I asked her? “Chocolate. I’ll get her some of that because you can never go wrong with it.” At least I know what kind she prefers there.

The closer I get to Fetterman, the more my confidence grows. She may not answer my calls or texts, but she can’t ignore me forever while I camp out at Missy’s place. I won’t have toworry about work. I’m sure Mason doesn’t want to see me again until I have this fixed.

Time to get our girl.
