Chapter Ten

Alexa

The couch is scratchy under me. Even through the thick material of my stockings, it’s uncomfortable. I thought these places were supposed to be the embodiment of putting a person at ease?

“Alexa, I think you’re finally beginning to understand you can trust other people.” Leanne, my therapist of two weeks now, leans forward in her seat. “You’ve done that with the women who have come into your life, and now it’s time for you to spread that to at least one male.”

“I understand.” Nodding, I continue to toy with the hem of my pencil skirt. There is no confidence in my response because I don’t believe her.

“Are you?”Shit. She sees right through me.

After finding her and setting up an appointment, I’ve felt my anxiety become a little more manageable in the past couple of weeks. All she wanted me to do for the first couple of appointments was talk. So I did. I shared everything about my past in the first week. The typical childhood, the boys I dated in high school, and everything that went down with Grant and the aftermath.

For the first time in my life, I was actually opening up about Teague.

Of course, I left out the fact Grant was a werewolf.

I have Rylie and Missy concerned already. I don’t need to be committed on top of everything else.

Miles is concerned too.

Thinking of him and the numerous calls and texts I refuse to look at flashes in my mind rather than formulating an answer to give her.

“Something wrong?” Of course, she catches the shift.

“I was thinking about Miles.” I found out on our third appointment it does no good keeping anything from her. Grant’s true nature aside.

“The man you felt something for and ran from?” She sits back once more and begins to write on her yellow notepad again.

“Yes.” I breathe out. “He’s still calling and texting me.”

“He must really like you.” She doesn’t glance up from whatever she’s writing.

“We don’t know each other.” I don’t know why I feel so defensive about this topic, but I feel a spark of heat in my chest.

“Do you think you can trust him?” She pushes this subject again.

There’s no need to think about it as the answer nearly shoots right out of my mouth. “Yes, I do.”

“Then why not answer him when he calls? Maybe give him a chance this next time?”

“You make it sound so simple.” I scoff.

“Alexa, it can be simple if you let it. We’ve discussed Miles, and from what you’ve said, there’s a genuine connection between the two of you. Explain where you’re coming from and give him a chance.”

“I don’t want to get hurt again,” I admit.

“Who said anything about getting hurt again? Has he given you any notion of that as a possibility?” She arches a brow at me.

“Well, no—”

“You’ll never know what could happen if you aren’t willing to take a risk. Has he exhibited any signs of abuse toward you?”

“No,” I answer automatically.

“Does he compare you to other women?”

“No, not in the way you’re implying,” I state.
