My sniffles and muffled whimpers traveled through the quiet night around us.

His gaze darkened and he took a menacing step forward. Jaws and fists clenched by his side. I moved away and my back hit an actual wall this time. His hands flew to the wall behind me, blocking either side of my face. He had me right where he wanted me; cornered and at his mercy.

His head dipped and his lips brushed my ear. Hot breath fanned my cheeks. I wasn’t sure what it was; fear or something else, but a shiver ran down my spine. Warmth pooled between my legs.

“You listen to me and listen carefully. I don’t bluff. I don’t make empty threats. And I don’t fuck around. There is no escape. You are not fucking leaving, got it? Even if you tried. You’ll never know your way out of here. You’re stuck with me, and I get to decide for how long.”

Before I was given a chance to react, he lowered his entire body and swept my feet off the ground, throwing me over his broad shoulder like I was nothing but a rag doll. My hair dangled upside down in the air and my face bounced against his back. The world spun and blood flowed to my head.

His hands gripped my ankles.

“What are you... What are you doing?” I shrieked.

No response.

He stomped through the main entrance, past the foyer, up the stairs, and into the bedroom I bade good riddance. “Hey! Put me down.”

As quick as a flash, I flew and landed on the bed. It was a basic slam-down. Knocked the breath right out of my lungs. I saw the sick satisfaction in his eyes and cringed. Groaning and twisting, I tried to get up, but he straddled me and lowered his face to mine.

That wasnotexpected.

I forgot how to breathe.

He was close, tooclose, our lips were inches apart.

My eyes widened and I pushed his solid chest. Futile. He didn’t budge. “What are you—Get off.” He caught my wrists and pinned my hands above my head, sliding his fingers through mine. Sparks tingled through my skin and sent a shockwave to my toes.

My brain turned to mush and my heart almost combusted from a rush of emotions. What was happening? This wassowrong. I hated this man... loathed him, even. But why did my body betray me and enjoy the feeling of him?

His lips found my ear again and he breathed on it. “You don’t know who you are fucking with, do you?” he whispered roughly.

My desperation throttled my voice into a breathy gasp, I closed my eyes and just shook my head. I was ashamed that being so close to this man made me weak.

I felt his smile and secretly wished I’d seen it.

“You don’t even know my name, do you?”

I swiped my tongue over my lips and had the crazy urge to know whathislips tasted like. “Am I... Am I supposed to know?” I mumbled.

He flicked his tongue under my earlobe and breathed, “Don’t you want to? I promise it’s one you will never forget.”

Wet.Hot. My lashes fluttered shut and I fought the urge to curl my toes. Whatthe hellwas wrong with me?

There was nothing nice about this man. He was dangerous. A murderer. A disaster waiting to happen. Still, a thunderstorm brewed between my thighs. I squirmed and shifted my hip, seeking contact with his warm body.

“What …What is your name?”

His hair brushed my forehead. It was soft and smelled like coconut and vanilla. My fingers itched to run through them.

He breathed softly in my ear,“Alexei,”and slowly, he lifted his head.

When his blazing gaze settled on mine, my heart skipped a beat. His eyes were intense and devoured me. Almost needy and vulnerable. As if he was contemplating whether or not to let me in. I bit my lower lip as his gaze darkened and the muscles in his jaw twitched.

In a blink, his expression changed, the soft look in his eyes was gone and replaced with an icy and soulless gaze. He drew away and walked towards the door. For unexplainable reasons, I missed his warmth.

“Fucking try me again, Vanessa. I dare you.”

He slammed the door, and the echo of the locks turning resonated with the thumps of my beating heart.
