Pavel might have been a loyal follower. The best of them, even. Fast, smart, and reliable. But he was still what I was. A man. Full-bodied and hot-blooded. And she was a great feast for the eyes. Any man with a functioning brain and dick would want her.Not as badly as I did

Taking care of Vanessa meant violating and eliminating.

Either way, it meant touching her.

The thought that she could be hurt made my insides tighten into a knot. And worse, the idea of another man touching her made my blood boil. A solidNo.

I dragged the tie lower, feeling restless. I didn’t want to hurt her. Didn't even want to kill her. What the hell was I going to do with her? Heat flushed to my groin and ideas sprung up. All of which had her pinned under me. Squirming, panting...

Naked, soaking wet, and hot.

For me.

Damn it!

With a growl, I ripped the tie off my neck and threw the cigar stub in the dish. “What is the status of his fucking location, Pavel? Don’t tell me it’s bad news again.’

He shook his head. “I’m sorry, but we’ve got nothing.”

Frustration hammered into my bones like a sledgehammer trying to get through the concrete. “And Knox?”

“Same thing. He’s got similar reports. We’ve dug up everything we can, asked all his contacts, and activated all tracking options, but... it’s like he disappeared from the surface of the earth. He’s fled. The last blip on his location was at the house, where we picked up his daughter. We’re not sure how he did it, but he’s covered his tracks pretty well.”

I shook my head. “He can’t be that smart and it’s not possible that he justdisappeared. There would be eyes and ears on the ground. Someone must know something.”

He paused and scratched the scruff on his jaw.

“What?”

He quirked his shoulder. “What if the girl knows something?”

I collapsed on my chair. The wheels squeaked and spun, and I released a snort.

“She doesn’t. If she did, I’d know.”

She was very transparent.

I could see into her, right into her soul. Like a delicate flower.Beautiful. Pure. Innocent.Everything I wasn’t. Everything I could crush with a mere touch. “She’s not particularly concerned about protecting him; she just wants to get out of here and thinks he is going to save her. If only she fucking knew.”

Pavel laughed, but I found nothing amusing.

I knew firsthand what it felt like to be all alone out there in the big cruel world. No friends or family. It fucking sucked, knowing you had no one watching your back. The bastard had no honor. He abandoned her without looking back. Not even a phone call to talk with her.

I didn’t care what her father’s sins were; no one deserved such a coward as a father. “I’m not going to rest until we find him, Pavel,” I announced, hinting at the tone of finality. “We have to think outside the box...”

An idea hit me like a speeding train on the tracks and with matching I plucked my phone from the desk and dialed the one person I knew with more influence than I had. The man who taught me everything I know.

Pressing the phone to my ear, I rose from the chair. He picked on the first ring.

I faced the window. “Boss.”

The sky was picturesque. A shade of bright orange and faint red, the sun was setting. At the other end of the phone came the sound of shuffling fabric, like sheets and clothes, and soft sighs. The corner of my lips twitched. I’d caught him at the wrong time and Grace didn’t sound too happy about that.

“I’ll be back.”More shuffling and the muffled sound of a zipper. “Alexei?”

“Yes, boss.”

He sighed. “This had better be fucking important.”
