“You’re not going to tell me, are you?”

“No.” He shook his head. “But I have something else to say and that is why I brought you here. To this place.”

He was so close; his hot breath fanned my face. I held my breath. Here came the moment of truth.

We can’t continue anymore. I’ve found someone else. I’ve found another kitten. This is the end of the road. Don’t worry, I’ll take care of Alex as I promised. Now, get the fuck out of my car.

I blinked, shutting the voice in my head. “What is it?” I squeaked.

He raked his fingers through his hair. “You look beautiful, kitten.”

Unintentionally, I exhaled and stared at him curiously. “Was that it? You tell me that a thousand times.”When we have sex.But I didn’t add that part.

“Because it’s true. Usually, you’re expected to blush and say thank you like other women would.”

I ignored the “other women” part, flashed a pretentious smile, and said, “Thank you, and you look... normal today.”

“Normal?” The corner of his eyes crinkled. “Never seen a man in a t-shirt and jeans?”

“Never seen Alexei Petrov in a t-shirt and jeans.”

“Well, that’s because we spend most of our time together, naked.”

Nude images of his body flooded my mind and heat rose to my cheeks. I rubbed my arms again and he reached to the back of the car and grabbed his suit jacket. Without asking, he put his arms around me and draped the jacket over my shoulders. But he didn’t pull back his arms.

“Vanessa...” His voice was thicker than usual. “I brought you here to tell you something important. I want this place to mean something good to you whenever you remember it. So, listen to what I’m about to say... you must know; that I have never said this to any woman before. This is going to be the first and, hopefully, not the last time you’ll hear this.”

My lungs squeezed. I wasn’t a huge fan of suspense.Spit it out already.

He parted his lips, then shut them again. Then, opened them again. “I thought long and hard about it, and the most logical conclusion is that I am in love with you.”

In love. Withme?

What?

Something stopped and screeched in my head, like tires halting abruptly on a street. “You...what?”

“Don’t expect me to start saying mushy things like how much you’ve changed my life and all that, okay? This is the me you’ll be getting for as long as you want. I won’t make any promises I can’t keep. But what I do know is that I want to spend the rest of my years with you,” he pulled out a diamond ring from his pocket. “if you’ll let me.”

All at once, pictures rushed through my mind. In one, I saw Carla and her beau from five years ago. I remembered the looks they’d shared, Carla’s innocent blush, and the twinkle in her eyes when she turned around and headed back inside to meet up with him.

Then, I recalled Karen and Akim from Mirabel J. Hudson’sStrong Obsessionand the crazy way Akim admitted his feelings for Karen after she accidentally spilled her coffee all over his expensive suit.

But this...

I looked at him. This was no coffee shop or accidental blurt.

He meant every word.

“Alexei...”

He didn’t let me catch my breath. “You drive me so fucking crazy, Vanessa. In the morning. At night. Every day, every minute. I can’t stop thinking about you. I don’t want any other woman but you. I want you, kitten—”

“You … You love me?”

“I believe that’s what I—”

Overwhelmed, I grabbed his face, with tears streaming down my eyes, and pulled him in for a kiss. Our lips met in the sweetest, shortest way. I didn’t care. It conveyed much more than my words could ever say.
