She didn’t let go.

“Alexei... no! Listen to me, we can find another way.”

I fastened my seat belt. “Get out of the car, Vanessa. Pavel is on his way to pick you up. Don’t resist; go home. Alex will return safely.”

“Alexei...”

“Get the fuck out.Now!”

She scampered, tripping over her sandals as she got out and reluctantly shut the door.

I did not turn around. But I saw her reflection. Her broken heart. The shimmering tears in her eyes and her silent plea. I gritted my teeth. I didn’t mean to yell. But I had to. And if I had to push her away a thousand times to guarantee her safety, I would do it in a heartbeat.

My feet hit the gas pedal and I sped down the road. Refusing to watch her crumple to the ground through the rearview mirror.

Bulbs flickered, on and off, from the old rusty streetlights on the street.

I closed the car door and scanned the deserted site. Broken glasses, rusty windowpanes, and cracked tiles. My nosescrunched up. It didn’t help that the area smelled like dead skunks.

Keeping my gun close, I skulked towards the entrance.

The dull, hollow ache intensified as I drew closer to the building. That sudden overwhelming urge to protect consumed me once more and, in that moment, I knew I’d do anything to keep my son safe. Even if it meant losing my life.

The rusty iron door creaked loudly as I stepped inside.

Memories of smoke and fire from five years ago rushed back. I remembered the moment I burned Mike Collin’s house and abducted his daughter. Years later, I found myself in a similar situation. The only difference was that I was not a bastard, like Mike, who abandoned his daughter in the hands of her captor.

How could he?

The thought of leaving Alexander a second longer with Joe was sickening enough.

I felt a stab in my heart that threatened to tear it to pieces when I thought of how Vanessa felt all those years ago. Abandoned and completely alone.

A bitter sneer escaped my lips. Life was a bitch. What goes around comes back around.

“Ah, what a surprise! He came. And alone, I see.”

Quick on my feet, I traced the direction of the voice, spun on my heels, and aimed. The fucking cunt stood a few meters away from me with a mischievous glint in his eyes and his men gathered behind him.

He pointed a gun at my head too.

He didn’t know it, but I gave him exactly ten minutes to bring out my son before I blew his brains out and commenced the search myself.

“Where is my son?”

Joe lifted his shoulder nonchalantly. “Somewhere.”

I cocked the gun.Nine minutes.“You don’t have a lot of time, Joe.”

“I could say the same for you.”

“No time for your fucking games! Where the fuck is he?”

He put a hand on his hip and tapped his chin with the tip of the black metal. “Oh, let me see... Mm, I think he’s somewhere close to the, um...”

Bang!
