He was quick. But I was quicker. I ducked and the bullet hit a rusty iron sheet on the wall.

Seven minutes.

I was going to kill the fucker. Right after I got my kid. “The boy, Joe.”

Six minutes.

“Fine, fine. I’ll let you die with your son in your arms.” He signaled one of his men, and he moved to the side. I saw small feet first, then hands flailing in the air before his tear-streaked face ran towards me.

“Daddy!Daddy!” He practically flew into my arms. I scooped him up with one arm, and he threw his small arms around my neck. He was shaking and his small heart pounded fast against my shoulder.

Three minutes.

I gnashed my teeth. Blinding rage sucked me in deep. “You’re a fucking psychopath.”

“I could say the same about you, Lexxie.” His eyes blazed now. “Who kills a man and throws him in the dumpster?”

Two minutes.

I looked around. I was outnumbered. I squeezed my son tighter against my chest.

“Trick question?” My lips curled upwards, and I shrugged. “A man who gets rid oftrash.”

One minute.

Guns cocked and arms went up in the air. Joe did not look pleased.

“Time to say goodbye, Lexxie.”

I shut my eyes and crouched just before a ricochet of bullets echoed in the air.

Joe’s men suddenly turned against themselves. A fight broke out and blood splattered. Joe fell to the ground and swiftly crawled between their feet. I eyed the safest corner to hide Alex.

“Cover your ears and keep your eyes closed,” I instructed. He nodded and I marched towards Joe and his men.

I aimed and fired. The men dropped to my sides, clearing a path until I saw Joe scrambling to his feet. I quickly tucked my gun into my belt and lunged at him.

“Joe!”

He turned around and I swung a fist. Red formed on his lips and smeared on my knuckles. He staggered backward and I pounced on him, punching, and bashing until two teeth flew out of his mouth.

He choked. Struggled to push me off. But I held him down.

Another blow. He choked again. Coughed. Blood splattered on my hand. I saw the image of Vanessa’s tears.

Red gurgled from his mouth, and he groaned. I saw the image of a scared Alex, crying and screaming, “Daddy!”

I felt my fear when I thought I would lose my son.

With a grunt, I bunched a fistful of his shirt, raised him up, and slammed his back against the ground. I jumped off him, rising to my feet. With one final look, I pulled out my gun and aimed.

Pop. Pop.

Two bullets one straight through the heart the other straight through his head.

****

I was just clearing the sand from Alex’s feet when I saw a tall man with long dark hair and blue eyes come out of the corner of my peripheral vision with a small smile on his lips. As always, he had a black fur coat draped over his dark suit. “Am I late to the party?”
