Sure enough, it was one of the large plantations that I had worked in before. Those were the houses that so many of the CEOs and other rich people owned but didn’t live in year-round. They were often used for vacation locations and other temporary venues, but I didn’t care.

What mattered to me was the fact that someone who was living in one of those houses was bound to have money, and right now, that was what we needed more than anything if we were going to keep the business afloat. My sisters didn’t know how bad things were, so there was no way for Teresa to know just how good this was.

“Great,” I said. “Thanks for everything. I’ll call Angela now and let her know she’s got this appointment tomorrow. I’m sure she’s going to be glad that you at least put it in the afternoon.”

“Doubt it, but I tried,” Teresa said. “You know Angie.”

I nodded. I did know our sister well, and I knew she wasn’t going to be thrilled. But I also knew she was going to have to do this for us. It was part of the teamwork aspect of our business.

I wrapped up the conversation with Teresa, and then I immediately called Angela.

“Hey, what’s up?” she asked.

“I’ve got an interview for you,” I told her. “Now that you’ve got your hours cut with your primary client, I figured you would be perfect for this new one.”

“What?” she asked. “I can’t take on another client right now, sis, you know that.”

“Why not?” I replied. “You just told me that you had your hours cut with the other one.”

“I also told you that I had an audition coming up, and I would be making up the lost wages from my client with the check I’m going to be getting from the show, remember?”

“The show you don’t have yet,” I said. “Angela, you know we have to prioritize here, and we have a client who is in need of a nanny now. You don’t even know when you’re going to audition for this show.”

“Do you think I could bring up to them that I have this coming up and may need the day off?” she asked.

“Angela!” I said, hoping she could pick up on my tone. I was frustrated with the fact she didn’t share the same vision of the family business as I did, but I also knew it was pointless to get angry with her for it.

“Well then, maybe you can be the one to cover for me on that day. You’ve done that before,” she said. “When is the interview?”

“Tomorrow,” I said. “One in the afternoon.”

“I can’t do it tomorrow,” she replied. “I have plans.”

“You have plans,” I repeated, my tone as dry as possible.

“I do,” she said. “Can we reschedule?”

“No,” I said. “Maybe. How about the next day?”

“Can’t,” she replied. “I have plans then, too.”

“Angela!” I snapped. “You know this is for the business!”

“And you know I have a life,” she replied. “It’s not my fault you scheduled me for an interview when you didn’t know whether I was able to do that interview.”

“I’m in class until three tomorrow,” I said. “I can’t do it.”

“Then have Teresa,” Angela replied.

I sighed. “I’ll figure it out.”

“Good luck,” Angela told me. I could have given her a real tongue-lashing, but I held back. I didn’t want to fight with her, and I knew it would be easy to start one.

Instead, I hung up and called the number Teresa had given me, hoping that this man wasn’t going to change his mind about us because of the mix-up.

“Hello, Alex?” I asked.

“Yes, who is this?” he replied.
