“She said ‘Mama’s home now’ before brushing me away like I was some solicitor,” I explained. “I don’t know what to do.”

“You need to talk to Alex,” Angela said. “The nerve!”

“But that’s just it,” I argued. “I told you I was off work all week because he said some family thing came up, but do you think this is what he was talking about? Is getting back with his ex-wife the family thing he had in mind? And why did he fucking sleep with me two weeks ago if he was in the process of getting back with her?”

“Sounds like a real shitbag,” Angela said.

“But he’s not,” I cried.

“If he was sleeping with you while talking to her, then he is,” she said.

“I don’t think that was the case,” I argued.

“Then there has to be something else going on here,” Angela replied. “If you’re convinced that wasn’t the case, then there has to be something else happening, and the only way to get to the bottom of it is to talk to Alex, right?”

I took a deep breath. She did have a point there. I didn’t see Alex being the kind of guy who would have gone out with me the way he had – even getting to the point of sleeping with me – following that up with the text messages he’d sent me and everything, all if he was trying to work things out with Lucy’s mom.

He’d said more than once he wished she was more hands-on with Lucy, which told me she wasn’t around much at all, further undermining my suspicion he had something going on with her.

“You’re right,” I said. “This doesn’t make sense.”

“And you know, not to complicate things, but even if the two of them were working things out, he still needs to know that you’re expecting his child. It’s not like you’re only pregnant with his kid as long as the ex-wife isn’t in the picture, you know?” Angela continued. “Either way, you have to have this conversation. And who knows? If this other woman is around, maybe you want to have it right in front of her so everyone is all on the same page.”

I laughed. I knew my sister wasn’t trying to be funny, but it was still such a ludicrous situation I had never before thought I would find myself going through. It was strange to think I was about to actually have to deal with it.

“What do I do then?” I asked. “Right now, I just want to drive away and I don’t know, call him or something? She just told me she’s staying, so it’s not like I can wait until I was supposed to be there tomorrow and try again then, you know?”

“Fuck that anyway,” Angela said. “You don’t deserve being pushed to the side like that and being told to get out of there. You have every right to also be there, and you have every right to speak to the man who got you pregnant. If I were you, I would march back up to that door and keep knocking until Alex himself shows up. If she wants to throw a fit about it, then she can have fun with that. I’m sure she’s going to have plenty to say when she finds out the truth, anyway.”

“I don’t know,” I said. “I’m not holding my breath. Let’s be real, I am – Iwas– the nanny. It’s not like he had to tell me shit about his personal life, and I honestly have no idea what role that woman currently plays.”

“And it’s not your problem, either,” Angela insisted. “It doesn’t matter if you’re fired or not; that’s not changing any of the realfacts here. You’re pregnant with his kid, so you have the right to talk to him about it. Find out what he has to say and go from there. Hold your head high, too. Fuck whoever that woman is and whatever her game is. You’re just as important, so she can fuck off.”

“Thanks, girl,” I said with a sigh. “I knew talking to you would be a good idea.

“Now you get back there, and you lay it all out,” Angela said. “You’ve got this, Cassie. I have faith in you.”

“Okay,” I said. “I’m doing it.”

“Do you want me to stay on the phone while you head back?” she asked.

“No,” I said. “This is tough enough; I don’t want to show up with the phone to my ear on top of it and have that woman demanding to tell her who I’m talking to. I don’t know, I think I’m going to take a bit of a drive and cool off before going back to talk to him.”

“What? Why?” Angela demanded. “Cassie, you can’t let her scare you off here. You have to talk to him.”

“I know,” I said. “And I’m going to. I’m just, I don’t know. I’m pissed off right now with the way she talked to me, and I don’t know if I can go back and have a reasonable conversation without things blowing up, and I don’t want that. I just want to talk to Alex, and if she’s going to be there while I do, then I’m going to cool down before I have to see her again. I’ll give it an hour, maybe two, and think about what I want to say before I go back.”

“And you’re for sure going back?” Angela prodded.

“Oh absolutely,” I said, feeling a little bolder. “I have to talk to him, and if what she said is true, she’s going to be there. So, I want to have the time to rehearse a few things before I say them out loud.”

“That’s fair,” she said. “Though it would be nice to be able to tell her to mind her own business.”

I chuckled softly.

“Somehow I think I have a big enough bombshell to drop on her.”
