“There, there,” Gigi said. “I think we’re getting down to what really has been stressing you out lately. The money might be an easy thing to focus on, but I think the real issue here is that you need to have this talk with this special man.”

I sighed and dragged my sleeve across my eyes. I knew she was right. I could stress about the possible outcomes until I went crazy, but the only way I would find out how he’d react for sure would be to tell him the truth and let the rest work itself out.

The longer I waited, the more likely it would be that he would be upset that I didn’t tell him sooner, after all. I had known about the pregnancy for nearly two weeks, and it was time.

“Alright,” I said. “You’re right. I can’t keep this to myself anymore. I have to talk to him, and I’ve got to do it soon.”

“How about tonight?” Angela prompted.

“Tonight?” I asked, my stomach clenching at the thought.

“There’s no time like the present,” Gigi gently remarked. “What do you have to lose?”

Alex. Lucy. Everything I have going on with them. I have a lot to lose,I thought. But I simply smiled as I shook my head.

“Once you have this conversation with him,” Gigi continued. “I think you’re going to find it a lot easier to think about the potential of this man being an investor.”

“But I don’t want to tell him with the plan of asking for money,” I said.

“And you’re not doing that,” she replied. “You’re telling him what’s going on with your relationship, and after that, you can decide how to move forward. But I really do think once you have that conversation out of the way, it’s going to be a lot easier for you to talk about money.”

I nodded. I couldn’t argue with that logic, at least.

“Alright,” I said. “I’ll go over there after I leave here tonight. But don’t for one second think I’m going to skip out on the rest of this dinner or hanging out with you guys first.”

“Just as long as you really go through with talking to him this time,” Angela said.

“I will,” I told her as I held up my hand. “Pinky promise.”

She looped her finger through mine and looked me in the eyes as she spoke.

“That’s a promise.”

Chapter Twenty-Six

Alex

“From what my lawyer said, Jordan’s going into court in two weeks for sentencing. From there, she’s going straight into custody, where she’s going to remain for eight weeks. I’ll be notified when she’s released, though I think that’s just a formality,” I explained. “Because there’s that no-contact order in place, and it’s going to remain in place effective since the time of her arrest.”

“Damn,” David said as he continued his presses. “And I thought I had some crazy exes out there. I mean, I always told you she had a crazy streak, but I guess I had no idea it was that crazy.”

“I should have listened to you,” I admitted. “You did tell me before she was going to turn on me. But love is blind, I guess.”

“And you did love her at one point,” he said. “Then when Lucy was born, I think you tried to make it work more for Lucy’s sake than anything. I think you’re a damn fool for what you went through, but at the same time, I think you were trying your best the whole way through.”

“I tried my best,” I agreed. “But it’s over. I mean, I really didn’t think the day would come when it would really be over. I thought I would forever in some way be dealing with that woman on some level, and now I won’t.”

“If I were you, I would consider it a victory every time you see a check going out to her,” he said. “I know it sucks that you have to pay alimony, but at the same time, that check is a check that means freedom for you. It means you’re no longer tied to the craziness that is your ex.”

“And that’s fair,” I agreed.

The two of us were back at the gym. It had been a couple of weeks since we had been able to meet up. I had been dealing with Jordan at the house for one week. While I had allowed her to take Lucy out to get ice cream a couple of times, I didn’t feel comfortable leaving for the gym with Jordan in charge.

I wanted to be able to be reached on my phone at any time I might be needed, and while I was working out, my phone was often locked up with my other things in the locker. Then, after the blow-up that happened with Jordan, I spent the week with Cassie staying at my place. Even though I was comfortable with leaving her in charge, I had been so enamored with her and the time we got to spend together I hadn’t wanted to leave.

I knew I could take a couple of weeks off, and it wasn’t going to do too much to my physical fitness, so I just texted David to let him know I would be meeting up with him again when I had the chance. When he texted me and asked if I was free this evening, I was more than happy to take him up on the offer.

I hadn’t seen Cassie all day. She said she had some things to work on with the business on her computer, and she was going to dinner with her sisters at her grandmother’s house that evening, so I brought Lucy with me to the gym. She loved the people who worked at the daycare, and she was happy for the chance to get to play with some of the other kids.
