So, I explained the whole story of what went down with my ex to David, and he was amazed at all the drama.

“I’m just glad I have Cassie in my life now,” I told him. “Call me crazy for wanting to get involved with any woman after what Jordan put me through, but I’m telling you, Cassie is like a one-eighty from Jordan. She’s everything Jordan isn’t, and then some, and I really do think I’m falling in love with her.”

“Oh boy,” David teased. “Do you want me to meet her? Maybe hang out with her a few times to make sure she’s not another secret crazy who is just waiting to be let out?”

I laughed. “After seeing the way she dealt with my ex, I’m pretty sure if there was any danger of there being a secret crazy in there, I would have seen it by now. But you know, I think it might be a good idea for the three of us to hang out together at some point. I do want you to meet her. And not to see if she’s crazy, but because I want to prove to you that I can find a woman who isn’t insane.”

“That remains to be seen,” David teased once more. “If you didn’t already have billions, I would put money on it. But I don’t want you to think I’m just looking for a way to get money out of you.”

“I’ll start calling you Jordan if you do,” I laughed.

“Don’t make me laugh while I’m trying to do these presses,” he told me. “You know I have to watch my breathing, or I’m going to drop the bar.”

“So don’t drop the bar,” I told him with a smirk. But I turned my attention back to spotting him. It was difficult to stay focusedat times when I was with my best friend. There were moments when I would feel like we were back in our teen years or early twenties, talking about girls and trying to get our lives figured out all while we were at the gym.

But I was also glad to be able to dump all the things I had on my mind on him.

He was one of the most levelheaded people I knew, and even if he did have some bias toward the situation since he was always on my side, he was a good man to talk to when I wanted to get a real opinion. He would tell me if he thought I was in the wrong about something, and he wasn’t shy about telling me when I had to pull my head out of my own ass, either.

We switched places twice more before we were both done with the set, and by then, it was getting on toward dinner time.

“I think that’s good for me, bud,” I said with a smile. “You doing anything else?”

“Hey, if you’re done, then I’m calling it a day, too,” he said. “I wasn’t really feeling motivated to come to the gym anyway, so that’s why I messaged you in the first place. I figured if you said no then I was going to take the day off, and if you agreed, I was going to push through to the point you were done, then I would be glad I did something, too.”

“Sounds like a sturdy plan,” I laughed. “You going to shower here?”

“Hell no,” he said. “I’m going to grab some food on the way home and watch the game. If you and Lucy aren’t doing anything yourselves tonight, you can come over.”

“Thanks, but I’m going to get her home,” I said. “I’ve had her in the car and running around all day. I think she’s going to be ready to get home and get to bed herself in not too long.”

“I’ll still come with you to see her,” he told me. “I beat you two here, remember? I didn’t get the chance to say hey to her before you took her into the daycare.”

“Right,” I said.

The two of us headed to the back of the gym, and I pulled her out of the room with all the other kids. While Lucy was happy to see me, she held her arms out to David as soon as she saw he had come along.

“Uncle Dave!” she cried out. “Hold me!”

“Come here, you little princess,” David said as he took her in his arms. “How have you been? My goodness, you are getting bigger and bigger every time I see you!”

“I’m growing like a weed. That’s what Cassie says,” Lucy beamed. “Do you know Cassie?”

“I don’t know her,” David said. “But I was just telling your dad I want to meet her.”

“You should. They’re going to get married,” Lucy announced.

My jaw fell open. I hadn’t said a word about marrying Cassie with Lucy around. I hadn’t even said the words out loud. It had been a thought in the back of my mind, but Lucy certainly wouldn’t know that.

“Oh really?” David said, giving me a look. “How do you know that?”

“Because she’s a princess, and I think Daddy should marry a princess,” Lucy said. David laughed.

“I thought you were the princess,” he told Lucy.

“There’s more than one princess,” Lucy said with her most matter-of-fact tone.

“Well then,” David said. “Sounds like you know what you’re talking about. Would you like it if your dad married Cassie?”
