So, I’d taken on the role of being the bookkeeper, among other things, eliminating the need for us to spend money on anyone else doing the service for us.

“I’m just saying!” Angela pointed out again. “Tiny TNT lives in a fantasy world, and it might help her to know there’s a real-life out here sometimes. You know, keeping it real.”

“Keeping it real?” Teresa asked. “Sis, you’re the one with your head in the clouds all day, every day.”

“Me?” Angela asked with wide eyes. “I am not!”

“You walk around and act like you’re some big TV star,” Teresa said.

“And one day I will be,” Angela retorted. “I just have to find the right show first.”

“Sure, you will,” Teresa rolled her eyes.

“Girls,” I said again. “Do your kids argue this much? Or are you not getting enough arguments during your week, so you have to make up for it when you’re away from your clients?”

“Fair point,” Angela said. “My girls have been angels all week, but I do have some bad news, sis.”

I braced myself. I wasn’t sure I could take any bad news after the week I’d had. I was grateful for the fact that Gigi’s doctor’s appointment had gone well, but that was about the only part of my own week that had gone according to how I’d wanted.

I hadn’t gotten shit for tips at the restaurant, and while I knew that was partly my fault for not working it as much as I couldhave, there was another part of me that was frustrated with working in the food industry at all. I was ready to be done with waitressing once and for all, and I was annoyed that I still had to do it most days during the week.

On top of that, I was taking a twenty-percent cut in my own paycheck this week. I had to if I wasn’t going to short my sisters either of their pay. We just hadn’t had the income that would require us all to get what we had signed up for. Of course, I wasn’t going to tell either of them that I had taken the cut. I knew there was no way they were going to let me.

And as the oldest, I wasn’t going to let either of them take the hit with their checks.

We all needed money, and if anyone was going to go without, it would be me.

“What’s the news?” Teresa asked when I didn’t say anything.

“I’m being cut back to two days per week,” Angela said. “Effective immediately.”

“What!” I cried. “Why?”

“Oh, you know how people get. They say they can’t afford to keep me on that much, and really, they don’t want to do it at all, saying they would rather be the ones to raise their own kids. But then you have the moms who don’t want to be stuck at home all the time, so she’s going to change her work schedule to going into the office two days a week.”

“Alright,” I said, biting my lower lip.

“Don’t worry!” Angela quickly interjected. “We’re going to be just fine. I’m going to help get the money, I promise.”

“How?” Teresa asked. “Cassie’s the one who assigns the clients, so if you’re not keeping the one you’re assigned, how are you going to keep bringing in the money?”

“First of all,” Angela said, giving Teresa a look. “I’m keeping the client. I’m just not going to be making as much with them as I was. Secondly, I’m going to get another job here pretty quick, and I’ll do the same thing Cassie does and put the check in the same pool as we do for the nanny business.”

“Oh?” Teresa asked. “Another job, huh? What are you going to be doing?”

“I have an audition,” Angela beamed.

“Oh?” I asked, trying to take a more supportive tone with my voice than our younger sister had. “Where? For what?”

“You know my dream is to be a talk show host,” Angela replied. “It’s for a show they’re going to start filming soon with some bigger names on it, but they’re also bringing in those of us who have actual training when it comes to kid psychology and stuff.”

“Oh, you mean like the View?” I asked. “Like it’s one of those talk shows that has a variety of hosts?”

“Sort of,” Angela said. “I mean, that’s the right idea anyway.”

“Why do you audition?” Teresa asked. “With your credentials, I would think if they were looking for someone like that, you would be a shoo-in.”

“You would think,” Angela said. “But they also want someone who is going to be good on TV. Like, you have to have the personality on top of the experience.”
