I paid for the food and left, only to receive a call from Glenn on my way back to my hotel.

“Do you think you could front me some money?” he asked.

“What?” I snapped. “You’ve got to be shitting me right now.”

“I guess with some of the shit that went down, there’s been a few people who pulled out of my vision,” he said.

“You lost investors?” I asked.

“In a way,” he said.

“No, that’s exactly what you did,” I said. “What do you need money for?”

“The hospital bill was quite a bit, and I guess there’s some damage I did to the property where I had the accident. If you could help me out, I’d appreciate it,” he said.

My phone beeped in my ear, and I looked to see Cassie was calling. With a sigh, I put Glenn on hold.

“I’m right in the middle of something,” I told her when she’d given me the reason she’d called. “Can it wait?”

I didn’t want to continue the fight with her, but it seemed she was far from being done with it. When she hung up on me, I was ready to throw my phone out the window. I was getting tired of people in general, and I hated that whatever we were fighting about was only making it worse.

“Look, Glenn, I’m not giving you any more money,” I said when I got back on the phone with him. “You need to figure this out. I was in your position once, and I did. Now you do the same.”

“Dude, I don’t know what I’m going to do,” he replied.

“You’ll figure it out,” I said.

I hung up the phone and then headed to the bar. It wasn’t like me to drink my issues away, but with how the past two days had gone, I was glad for the chance to sit down and relax. Lucy was back home with Cassie, and even if my girlfriend was pissed at me, I knew Lucy was in good hands with Cassie being the one in charge. I was free to have a few drinks and not have to worry about being the responsible adult for a little while at least.

I ordered myself a whiskey coke and settled in along the bar to watch whatever game was on TV. I didn’t want to talk to anyone, so I made a point to hunch over my drink as I glanced up toward the TV every now and then.

The bartender made small talk with me, but he soon got the hint I wanted to be left alone. I just wanted to have some time tothink and be lost in myself. I had to figure shit out, but life wasn’t making that easy for me.

“Hey, handsome,” a voice said.

I looked up to see a sexy young woman walking over. She sat on the bar stool next to me. “Care to have some company?”

“It’s a public place,” I said dismissively.

“Sure,” she said with a giggle. “But it’s strange to see someone as handsome as you over here alone. Makes me wonder if you’re lonely.”

“I’m not,” I said.

“Wait a second,” she cried. “You’re Alex Osborne! Now youhaveto tell me what you’re doing here alone.”

“You say that as though I’m supposed to be with someone,” I told her.

“Well, you’re sort of a big deal,” she said with a grin. “So yeah, I would expect you to be with someone, especially at the bar.”

I looked at my phone. I had been at the bar all afternoon, not even realizing how much time had passed. It was getting close to eight pm in Georgia. I should be calling, or at the very least texting, to see how Lucy was doing before she went to bed, but I really didn’t know what to say to Cassie. I knew she would let me know if there was something wrong, so I really didn’t need to check in on that front.

But if I were to text her, then there was a chance I would start another argument, and I didn’t want that.

“I’m in town on business,” I said to the young woman. “That’s all.”

“Alone?” she asked.

“You ask a lot of questions,” I told her, and she giggled. I wondered what number of drinks she was on as she sipped from the little plastic cup, and I started to look for a way of escape. The gentleman in me didn’t want to abandon her there in thatstate without knowing if she had friends around, but she was getting increasingly flirtatious by the second.
