But I loved the way she’d reacted.

The only thing she’d been upset about with the idea was the fact she wasn’t ready to be proposed to at the moment, and to me, that was an excellent sign. That told me that she had also given it some thought, and she seemed to like the idea.

It was just a matter of finding the right time to ask her.

And I had a feeling that wasn’t going to be too difficult to do.

Chapter Thirty-Three

Cassie

It had been a whirlwind of a morning, and when I sat down to lunch with my sisters, they were all over me asking for details about the night before.

I had texted Angela that morning to tell her Alex had come back and how I had thought he was some sort of an intruder coming in late at night since he hadn’t told me he would be returning. She thought it was hilarious that I’d given him a black eye, and she’d promptly told Teresa after.

Of course, the two both wanted to meet me for lunch since Alex was back to take care of Lucy and after the conversation, I’d had with him, I took them up on the offer. I wanted to get their perspective on what he’d said.

“Spill it,” Angela said as soon as I sat down. “I can tell you have something to share with us. Your poker face is horrible.”

“I have a lot to share,” I said. “I don’t even know where to start.”

We were interrupted by the waiter coming to get our drink orders, and I pushed having the real conversation until after we had ordered and the food was brought to our table. I hated trying to talk around ordering along with waiting for the food to come and I wanted to wait until we had the chance to actually become engrossed in the conversation before I brought up the things that were really on my mind.

After the food was brought to the table, there was a slight lull in the conversation before my youngest sister started the topic in the right direction.

“Was his eye terrible this morning?” Teresa asked. “I still think that’s funny as shit that you hit him like that.”

“Obviously, I wouldn’t have hit him if I knew itwashim who had come home,” I replied with a chuckle. “He thought it was a lot funnier than I do. And it wasn’t bad enough to keep him from going back to Colorado this morning with Lucy.”

“He went back?” Angela asked in surprise. “Why?”

“There were a few things he wanted to handle that he just felt were better taken care of in person,” I said with a shrug. “But he wanted to take Lucy with him this time to make sure she didn’t feel like he was abandoning her, while at the same time, I could get the chance to get some of my own work done.”

“Did you talk to him anymore about his investing in the company?” Angela asked.

“No,” I said quietly. “But you know, he did say something last night when he got back that I wanted to ask you two what you think.”

“Oh?” Angela said. “So, we’re getting down to the reason for this SOS?”

“He was telling me about getting hit on when he was in the bar,” I said, taking a bite of my sandwich to let the suspense build. “And when I asked how we were going to keep other women away from him, he said we should get married.”

“What!”

Both my sisters gasped at the same time. I could tell they were shocked with the sudden seriousness of the relationship. Even though they both knew I was pregnant, there was something about talking marriage that made it seem even more serious.

“Right?” I replied. “I told him I didn’t want to talk about marriage when I wasn’t even wearing my own clothes or makeup. I mean, I was dressed in clothes I had borrowed out of his closet along with waking up after falling asleep on the bed next to Lucy. I looked like shit, and I didn’t want to get swept up in the moment.”

“What did he say?” Angela asked.

“He just said he wasn’t really proposing to me then, because he wasn’t going to propose to me when he didn’t have a ring to give me at the same time. Or something like that,” I replied. “But I’m glad he wasn’t proposing because I don’t know how I would have responded to him since I hadn’t told him about the baby yet.”

I said the words simply, though I knew my sisters weren’t going to be happy with me when they found out.

“Cassie!” Angela snapped. “You went over there the other night to tell him! That was literally the reason you left the dinner!”

“I know,” I said sheepishly. “But when I got there, he was packing for the trip, and I don’t know, I guess I didn’t want to tell him when he was on his way out the door. And I was being bitchy anyway, so it was only getting worse. Then all at once he was gone, and I wasn’t going to tell him over the phone.”

“Then he came home last night and you didn’t tell him then, either?” Angela asked. “He brings up marriage, and you tell himyou don’t want to talk about it because of how you’re dressed – but still don’t bring up the fact you’re pregnant?”
