“I just don’t know if I want to commit to having a nanny around when I might not need one, you know?” I asked.

“Don’t get cheap,” he said with a laugh. “You know you have the money for it.”

“That’s not what I mean!” I said. “I don’t want to pass my daughter off on someone else to raise. Lucy is the entire reason why I got out of doing that whole risk-taking guru gig I had going, and I’m not going to pass her off on someone else now.”

“Sure, but at the same time, it might be nice to have someone else around so you can do some of the shit you need to get done. Like, just because the nanny is there, that doesn’t mean that you aren’t able to get your own shit done,” David said.

I paused. I hadn’t really thought about that. I always assumed when the nanny had the kid, that meant she was either going to take the kid with her, or I would be leaving the kid and she would take over. I hadn’t thought about the idea of being present while the nanny was working.

“It’s totally a thing,” David continued. “I know there are plenty of people who have a nanny around to help with the childcare while they’re getting work done around the house. That can be those who work from home or those who have to get literal work around the house done. It’s kind of the point of the nanny. So, you can be flexible.”

“That’s fair,” I said. “Alright. If anything, it doesn’t hurt to look into it at least a little I guess.”

“Great,” David said. “Because if you do go with this, you’re totally going to owe me one.”

“Oh, now I see what you’re doing,” I said with a smirk. “You were hoping to get some sort of payout from me.”

“Yup, me and your ex-wife both,” he teased.

I laughed. “Well, both of you are going to have to wait on that. I’m a little busy at the moment.”

“You’re the one who wanted to be a billionaire,” he teased. “If you didn’t want your life filled with flies, you shouldn’t have decided to make a pot full of honey.”

“I’m not sure if you made that up or if you’re quoting someone, but you need to stop,” I told him with an amused grin. “You’re trying way too hard right now, and I don’t appreciate it,” I said. “You helped me once, and I’m not giving you any more credit today.”

“Fair enough,” he said. “Guess I better keep the real zingers to myself. I’ll let the excitement about this new nanny thing wear off, and then I’ll come at you again.”

“Please don’t,” I said with a chuckle. “I’m tired of having people coming at me, not going to lie.”

He laughed, and we switched places on the bench once again. We had worked out such a routine with each other, it wasn’t difficult for either of us to get in a full body workout during the time we were together. By the time we were finished, we were both sweaty and tired, and David was ready to hit the showers right at the gym.

“I’ll shower when I get home,” I said. “I’m sure Lucy is done at the daycare.”

“Little Lu?” he asked. “You know she’s running the roost over there. It’s not like it’s going to take that much longer for you to shower before you head out.”

“Forgive me,” I said. “But I miss her already.”

“God, you’re smitten,” he said with a laugh. “Fine. I’ll talk to you more later.”

“Later,” I said.

And he was right. I was beyond smitten with my daughter. She was my whole world, and I was happy to cut anything short when I could if it meant I was able to spend more time with her. I knew she had fun when she went to the daycare at the gym, but I also wasn’t going to waste any time picking her up, either.

“Hey pumpkin!” I said when I reached the daycare.

“Daddy!” she yelled, running toward me.

“I missed you,” I said, scooping her up in my arms. I then turned my attention to the workers. “How was she?”

“A perfect angel,” Jessica, the woman in charge, told me. “We love having Lucy here. I swear she’s the sweetest thing.”

“That’s my girl,” I said, holding her close. “Thank you again for watching her for me.”

“It’s what we do,” Jessica said with a flirty smile. I always felt she laid it on thick whenever I came to get Lucy, but I always treated her with the same level of professional respect. After what I had gone through with Jordan, I wasn’t in any hurry to get to know any woman on a romantic level, and I was careful not to give the impression I was interested.

“Come on, pumpkin,” I said to Lucy. “Let’s get home. You look tired.”

She was rubbing her eyes, and I hoped to be able to get her back to the house and cleaned up before she fell asleep. It wasn’t always easy, but I would rather deal with her being grumpy at the moment than have her take a short nap and be up too late.
